BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball team won their game against Rocky Mountain College 85-58 on Monday Nov. 25.
It has been three weeks since the Yellowjackets faced Rocky in the Fortin Center across town, but the difference in score was only five points from one game to the other.
Last time the two teams played, MSU Billings (4-2, 0-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) won the contest 90-58. It was the same shooting percentage for the Yellowjackets in both contests: exactly 50.0 percent from the field. MSUB's three- point percentage was down a little 44 – 32 percent, and their free-throw percentage dropped from 90-75 percent. But, the big story on the night was the difference in team play. Five players for the Yellowjackets scored in double-digits and five players had five or more rebounds on the night.
Chelsea Banis and
Kayleen Goggins both had a team-high 15 points for MSU Billings. Banis was 7-11 from the field and 1-1 from the free-throw line.
Tenika Capouch was 4-7 from the field and 6-9 from the charity stripe; she finished with 14 points. This is a new individual season-high for Capouch in points.
Annie DePuydt and
Quinn Peoples both scored 11. Depuydt was 4-8 from the field, 2-2 from the free-throw line and had a team high eight rebounds which is also a new season-high in rebounds for her.
Bobbi Knudsen finished 2-5 with five rebounds and a team-high seven assists. All nine players on the Yellowjackets team recorded an assist in the game.
"I thought we showed a lot of improvement from the game three weeks ago," Head Coach
Kevin Woodin said. "We are getting more balance in our approach, getting that extra pass inside, scoring some more in transition, and we are shooting more consistently as well."
Rocky Mountain College (1-0, 0-0 Frontier Conference) shot 30 percent from the field, but were 18-23 from the charity stripe. Jayde Lefevre and Megan Halstead both team-highs of 10 points. Halstead shot 100 percent in the game; she was 3-3 from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Katie Fitzpatrick and Mya Perrow-Donovan both had eight points for the Battlin' Bears. They, and Taylor Kufeld all had six rebounds for RMC.
MSU Billings led by as much as 36 points, but late in the second half, the Battlin' Bears would dial-it-in, scoring 15 points in the last 4 minutes and 30 seconds to take the score to its final tally.
Rocky had 19 turn-overs. Montana State Billings scored 19 points off of those turn-overs, and only committed nine turn-overs themselves. MSUB scored 40 points in the paint. Rocky had eight.
"I thought we did well in the paint tonight, and I thought we committed less turn-overs in the game tonight than we have been," Coach Woodin said. "We were also communicating better on defense."
This was an exhibition game for Rocky, and a counted game for MSU Billings.
The Yellowjackets continue their eight day tour, playing the last of the four Montana schools on their schedule before Thanksgiving. MSU Billings will host Montana State Northern Wednesday Nov. 27 in an early start to the holiday weekend. The game will begin at 5:30 PM. Admission to Wednesday's contest is ½ priced with the donation of a non-perishable food item. Live video and live stats will be available at MSUBSports.com.
