BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings men's soccer team registered its second win of the season in a 1-0 victory over the University of Mary Saturday.
The Yellowjackets are now 2-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. With the loss, the Marauders are 0-9 overall and 0-6 in GNAC play.
"The games against Mary are never easy, and we knew it'd be a battle," Head Coach
Alex Balog said. "They play a very different style of soccer than us; we try to keep the ball on the ground and build from the back, they love to play kick and rush. I felt that especially after half time we adapted well and had the upper hand."
Montana State Billings'
Haley Klarich continued his hot streak scoring the lone goal of the game in the 57th minute. The ball was played into the box, when
Thorge Jess leaped up for a header and off the rebound Klarich drilled the ball into the back of the net from 15 yards out. The goal was Klarich's fourth of the season and third in the past two games.
Eoin Hurley protected the Yellowjacket goal in magnificent fashion recording six saves without allowing a single goal. West recorded three saves and allowed one goal.
"I'm very happy for the guys and proud of them that they adapted to a different style of soccer and were able to match and even top Mary's physicality," Balog said. "All-in-all, it was a more than well-deserved victory for us against an opponent that we really dominated soccer-wise. With two wins in a row we're looking forward to NNU next week."
The Marauders let loose nine shots with seven on goal. The Jackets edged that total with a barrage of 10 shots and four landing on goal. Mary held a slight advantage in corner kicks leading MSUB, 5-4.
The Yellowjackets welcome Northwest Nazarene on Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. during MSUB's 12th annual Futbol Frenzy. Live video and Stats for the match can be found at MSUBSports.com.
