BILLINGS, Mont. - The Montana State University Billings Men's Soccer team will play their final two home matches of the season this week against the Saint Martin's University and Seattle Pacific University.
The Jackets come into the week riding a three game streak which has seen them go unbeaten against South Dakota School of Mines (Oct. 3), University of Mary (Oct. 5) and Northwest Nazarene (Oct. 17). MSUB will look to continue this hot streak against two quality opponents.
The Saints (3-7-1, 3-3-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) and the Jackets(2-6-3, 2-3-2 GNAC) played a tightly fought match last time the two met with the Saints narrowly beating the Jackets 2-1 and outshooting the Jackets 13-11.
Thorge Jess scored the lone goal for MSUB while
Haley Klarich and
Kyle Emerick both had late shot attempts that missed their mark allowing SMU to barely escape with a victory.
Montana State Billings is fifth in the conference with 33 points on the year and SMU is sixth with 29 points.
The Jackets goalie Eion Hurley is fourth in the conference with 44 saves and he, along with the Jacket defense, have only conceded two goals in the past three games while the goalie combinations of JJ Olsen and Eric Owen have allowed in five goals in their past three games.
"We're going into this week's games with a lot of confidence," Head Coach
Alex Balog said. "We're on a three game unbeaten run in which we have scored 5 goals and only conceded 2. We played some of our best soccer this season against a good NNU side. It's unfortunate we didn't get a win, but it's also something that we take into the game against SMU. They are an organized side, so we'll have to play well to break them down."
Seattle Pacific (7-1-2, 5-0-2 GNAC) is unbeaten in conference play and ranked fifth in the region. They also took down Simon Fraser who was number one in the Nation at the time. SFU is now number three. Seattle Pacific meanwhile is ranked towards the top in goals-against average, allowing .67 per contest (13th). Cody Lang has been a major reason for the Falcons' defensive success, ranking 18th in the nation individually in goals-against average (.67) and 30th in save percentage (821).
The Falcons defeated the Jackets 3-2 (Sept. 28) in Seattle and out shot MSUB 15-8. The Falcons are second in the conference in shot attempts (154), points (47), goals (17), and goals per game average (1.70). MSUB is sixth in the conference is shot attempts (129), fifth in points (33), goals (12) and goals per game (1.09)
"SPU will be as good as always, Balog said. "However, they haven't won here the last two years and we intend to keep it that way."
The match against Saint Martin's begins at approximately 3:30 PM Thursday at Yellowjacket Field.
The match against Seattle Pacific will be senior day for the two seniors,
Chad Ward and
Landon Horst. They will be honored before the match. The match is slated to begin at approximately 1:00 PM Saturday. Live stats and video for both games can be found at MSUBSPORTS.COM.
