BILLINGS, Mont. –The Montana State University Billings Men's Soccer team is in the midst of a five game home stand and will take on The University of Northwest Nazarene Crusaders Saturday at Yellowjacket field.
The match will be the first meeting between the two teams this year, NNU swept MSUB in their two meetings last year (2-0, 1-0). The Jackets are 8-8-1 all-time versus the Crusaders. MSUB is currently 2-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play while NNU is 3-3-3 overall and 3-2-1 in GNAC play.
"We're looking forward to the game against NNU with a lot of confidence after our two consecutive conference wins," Head Coach
Alex Balog said. "Last year we lost to them at home with 2-0, after outshooting them 38-4. The returners remember that game very well as a win in that game could have qualified us for the National Tournament. They understand that we need to set the record straight. We practiced very well this week and the boys look sharp. Another good result can help us for next week's games against SMU and SPU at home."
Haley Klarich has been on a scoring streak scoring three goals in the Jackets last two games and now has four goals on the season while leading the team with eight total points.
Sam Butterworth and
Thorge Jess each have two goals on the season and five points.
Kyle Emerick,
Chad Ward,
Jesper Fries and
Michael Aringer each have one goal on the year. Aringer is this week's GNAC Red Lion Defensive Player of the week for his play in MSUB's last victories against South Dakota School of Mines (Oct. 3rd) and The University of Mary (Oct.5th)
Yellowjacket goalie Eion Hurley is 2-6-2 with 41 saves and a .719 save percentage. MSUB is currently fifth in the conference allowing 1.60 goals per game while NNU is fourth allowing 1.22 goals per game. NNU goal tender Ryan Foo has allowed 11 goals and has a .796 save percentage.
The Crusaders boast the GNAC Red Lion Offensive Player of the week in Fredy Razo. He is a prolific offensive player who leads the conference in scoring with eight goals, eighteen points and has scored in seven straight matches.
The men's team will host the Wendy's 12th Annual Futbol Frenzy event and the Women's team will host the "Big Hearts Under the Big Sky" charity match.
The Lady Jackets will partner with the Montana Outfitters and Guides Association (MOGA) for the event. MSUB has regularly volunteered at the "Big Hearts Under the Big Sky" auction over the past four years, and decided to do something special in 2013 by dedicating a game to the organization.
Big Hearts Under the Big Sky is a charitable partner with MOGA where they provide military service men and women, children who face the challenge of a life threatening illness, and women who are battling breast cancer the opportunity to enjoy a Montana outdoor adventure at no cost.
Going 12 years strong, MSUB's Annual Futbol Frenzy will once again be sponsored by Wendy's, and free chili (while supplies last) will be provided to Yellowjackets' fans who attend the event.
Saturday's double-header event will start promptly at 1:00 PM as the men's team competes against Northwest Nazarene University, followed by the women's match against Saint Martin's University at approximately 3:30 PM.
