Men’s Soccer Off to Best Start Since 2007

Box Score Box Score

Billings, Mont. – The Montana State Billings men's soccer program is off to a great start this fall. Fresh off two straight victories and a recent No. 9 west region ranking in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll, the Yellowjackets showed no signs of let down in their matchup against the University of Hawaii-Hilo. MSUB came out determined to be the first team to go unbeaten in Hawaii in the program's history. The Yellowjackets accomplished their goal and are off to the best start since 2007.

MSUB and Hawaii Hilo squared up and played a highly competitive physical match, but the Yellowjackets talent and depth proved to be too much for the Vulcans personnel. In the first period MSUB attacked first, taking three shots on goal within the first seven minutes of the contest. Thomas Sheets fired a shot that deflected off the post and Legofi Crawford took two shots that were saved by Hawaii Hilo's Luis Romero

Staying on the attack the Yellowjackets earned two corner kicks in the 14th minute. Kyle Emerick put the ball in great position each play, but Christian Wilhelmsen's shot went high and Sheets' shot hit the post for the second time on the day.

Dominating the time of possession, the MSUB defense would not allow the Vulcans to take a shot in the half and would take four more shots with two being on target. The Jackets and Hawaii Hilo went into the break tied 0-0.

MSUB brought their offensive rhythm from the first half into the second period. Matt Brink and Chad Ward fired quality shots on goal in the early minutes of the half that were saved by the opposition. Hawaii-Hilo gained the player advantage when Clifton Thomas received a red card forcing the Jackets to play with 10 players.

The Yellowjackets would not wallow on their disadvantage, they instead kept applying more offensive pressure forcing the Vulcans to knock in an own goal off of a deflection. Shortly after this Emerick received a great pass from Thomas Chameraud and effectively completed the play scoring his first goal of the season giving the Jackets the 2-0 lead and putting the game out of reach for Hawaii Hilo.

While they weren't strongly tested on defensive, MSUB's backline and midfielders were key in keeping the offensive in constant attack. Eoin Hurly started his third consecutive game and denied the only two shots on goal from the Vulcans on the day.

“I'm really proud of our team today,” stated head coach Dan McNally. “It's hard to win three games on the road, especially in Hawaii, but everyone focused in and we got the job done. This experience has been fantastic for our program.”

The Yellowjackets next match will be an away contest versus No. 7 nationally ranked (NSCAA/Continental Tire poll) Simon Fraser Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012.
