Men’s Soccer Drop Match Versus Nationally Ranked Conference Opponent

Box Score Box Score

Billings, Mont. – The Montana State Billings men's soccer program headed into their Great Northwest Athletic Conference slate riding a three game winning streak. Heading west for their second road trip of the year and first on the conference schedule, MSUB faced No. 12 nationally ranked Simon Fraser University. The Jackets were very competitive in the match but were unfortunately edged out 2-0 by the Clan.

MSUB's early success would be tested facing a traditionally good soccer program and consistent national rank holder in Simon Fraser. Senior defender and co-captain Conner Moe took the first shot of the match with a header that was saved by the Clan's Jd Blakely. Following this attempt, Simon Fraser countered in the 11th minute with a shot by Chris Bargholz that found the back of the net giving them the early lead.

After their score, the Clan stayed heavy on the attack with five consecutive shots between the 16th and 22nd minute of the contest. Sam Butterworth and the Jacket defense held up strong and did not allow any scores. MSUB then came back with offense of their own as senior forward Thomas Sheets fired a shot on goal in the 30th minute that was saved.

Both squads slightly went back and forth as the Clan took a 1-0 lead into the break. Simon Fraser was equally as strong in the second half. The Clan took a shot that went wide within the first minute of the half. The offensive barrage continued and Simon Fraser found success in the 55th minute of play, scoring their second goal of the match and holding a firm grip on the game.

With the lead in their hands Simon Fraser continued to control the possession of the ball and effectively closed out the match, defeating the Yellowjackets 2-0.

MSUB now sits at 3-1 and 0-1 in the conference. Eoin Hurley started his fourth consecutive game at goal keeper and had four saves on the day.

“We are really frustrated tonight,” stated head coach Dan McNally. “The big moments in the game didn't go our way. We gave everything tonight but it's about getting results so it's a setback. We will put this game behind us and get ready for a tough game at Western Washington on Saturday.”

The Yellowjackets next GNAC match will be in Bellingham, Wash. against Western Washington University on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2:00 p.m. (Pacific Time).
