Sheets Hits Game Winning Goal to Give Jackets 1-0 Start on the Season

Box Score

Billings, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings men's soccer program is picking up where they left off from the previous season. Last fall the Yellowjackets ended the season with two consecutive victories. Following suite with this trend, MSUB starts their eight day three game Hawaiian road trip with a victory over Chaminade University.

On a sunny but windy contest, Montana State Billings came out strong controlling the majority of the game. In the first half of the match after the first shot by Chaminade's Edward Mussi, the Jackets took six straight shots with five being on target before the Silverswords were able to take their second shot, first on goal.

This pattern continued for the rest of the first half, with the Jackets offensive attack defining the theme of the first 45 minutes. Senior forward Thomas Sheets came out very aggressive, taking four total shots with three of them coming on goal.

MSUB's offensive attack broke through in the closing minutes of the first half when first year Yellowjacket Legofi Crawford scored the first goal of the season for the team off of an assist by Clifton Thomas. Crawford lobbed the ball over the top of the goal keeper for his first career goal as a Yellowjacket.

Matt Brink and the Jacket defense were equally as great during the first 45 minutes. MSUB's backline did not allow the Silverswords offense to gain much momentum in the contest. In total Chaminade took three shots, two on goal in the half.

Second year goal keeper Eoin Hurley started between the pipes and had two saves during the first half, securing the 1-0 lead for the Jackets going into the break. In total MSUB took 15 shots in the first 45 minutes.

During the second half of the contest, the tempo of the game evened out and both teams offense took an even amount of shots. The elements started to become a determining factor as it affected the trajectory of the shots taken in the second half.

The Silverswords had a slight offensive burst in the second half taking four consecutive shots before the Jackets Crawford took a shot on goal at the 63:54 minute. Due to several fouls by the Jackets, Chaminade successfully scored on a penalty kick by Sam Galloway tying the contest 1-1 during the 76:07 minute of the contest.

While the contest was now even in the score column, the Yellowjackets handled the situation with poise and continued their aggressive offensive attack, with Sheets nailing a 25 yard game winning goal past the Silverswords' goal keeper in the 76:51 minute.

After the game winning goal by Sheets, the Jackets defense held tight against three shots on goal by the opposition to secure the 2-1 win.

Overall MSUB's talent and depth proved to be too much for Chaminade. The Jackets took 23 total shots, with 12 being on target. Seven different Yellowjackets took shots during the contest. Hurley had six total saves on the day facing 11 total shots by the Silverswords with seven being on goal.

“Great way to start the season,” stated eighth year head coach Dan McNally. “We dominated the game both offensively and defensively, and created lots of opportunities to score goals. On a long road trip it's important to start with a win, the players did well today.”

The Yellowjackets will face Hawaii Pacific University Saturday, Sept. 1 in their next regular season contest.
