DENVER, Colo. – The Montana State Billings men's tennis team went 1-1 in the opening day of the 2012 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tennis Championships hosted by Metro State University and Colorado Mesa University but the women's squad was unable to match that success as they fell 0-2 to be eliminated from competition.
The third-seeded Yellowjacket men opened their time in the conference tournament with a 5-2 victory over co-host and sixth-seeded Colorado Mesa. The Yellowjackets led early after claiming their No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matchups. Alson Leon and
Navin Marimuthu defeated Jordan Lyden and Andres Hernandez 8-6 at No. 1 doubles while
Mikel Kosich and
Kavindu Gamage joined forces to best John Hendrickson and Sterling Inouye 8-4.
Leon,
Brad Knutson and Gamage all won their singles matches while Marimuthu and Thomas Stafflineo were both ahead in their matchups when the Yellowjackets clinched the win and were thus forced to end their contests unfinished.
The second match of the day against No. 2 seed and nationally-35
th-ranked University of Nebraska – Kearney did not go as well for the Yellowjackets. Leon and Marimuthu claimed the lone win at No. 1 doubles as the Lopers swept the rest of the matchups to end the match 5-1 over MSUB and advance to the championship match.
After the split, the Yellowjackets will face co-host and fourth-seeded Metro State College at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 in the double-elimination tournament.
The Yellowjacket women, who were the No. 7 seed in the RMAC Championships, fell 0-5 Saturday to both second-seeded Colorado Mesa and sixth-seeded Colorado Christian University to finish their 2012 campaign 2-16.
