BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings tennis squads wrapped up their 2012 spring regular season schedule with four matches over three days last weekend and are now ready for the post-season starting with the 2012 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships co-hosted by Metro State College and Colorado Christian University in Denver, Colo.
The men's squad enters the tournament as the third-seed while the women will head to Denver as the seven-seed.
With a 4-2 record in conference this season, the men will face off against the No. 6 seed, Colorado Mesa University in the day's second match at 8 a.m. In their regular-season meeting on Friday, April 13, the Yellowjackets claimed a 7-2 victory over the Mavericks.
The winner between the 'Jackets and the Mavericks will go on to face the winner of a match between second-seeded University of Nebraska-Kearney and No. 7 seed Colorado Christian University. The loser will go on to face the loser of the same match.
The men will be led into battle by
Alonso Leon and
Navin Marimuthu at No. 1 doubles where the duo is currently 8-4 for the season. Leon enters the season 9-2 at No. 2 singles. Marimuthu and
Kavindu Gamage are 7-5 and 7-4 respectively for the season splitting time between No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
MSUB's women, boasting one of the youngest rosters in the league, failed to win a single conference match this season but were in contention in most every match they participated in. The 'Jackets will have a tougher road as the start off their weekend against the second-seeded Mavericks at 11 a.m. on Friday.
The winner of the women's match-up will go on to face the winner between No. 3 Western New Mexico University and sixth-seeded Colorado Christian University. The loser will have another shot at redemption by taking on the loser of the same match.
Action at the 2012 RMAC Championships will span Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 and will be double elimination. The championship match will be contested at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
