SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Montana State University Billings' women's and men's track field teams hit three Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship automatic-qualifying marks in the season-opening meet, the Black Hills State University Holiday Classic.
“I'm very pleased with how we started our season this weekend,” MSUB women's and men's Head Coach
Dave Coppock said. “We had school records fall and individuals qualify for the conference championships. I thought our women's jumpers did very well, while our men's throwers had a strong day. I think we head into this long break with some confidence about the rest of our season coming up.”
Stacey Pitt,
Leah Berry, and
Hunter Borner went 1-2-3 in the women's high jump, and all qualified for the GNAC Indoor Championships. Pitt's winning mark was 1.62 meters (5 feet, 3.25 inches), while Berry's mark was 1.57 meters (5 feet, 1 inch). Both those marks were auto-GNAC marks. Borner hit a provisional mark at 1.52 (4 feet, 11 inches).
Pitt also hit a provisional mark with a second place finish in the women's pole vault. The junior's top mark was 3.35 meters (10 feet, 11 inches).
Berry broke her own school record in the pentathlon with a 2,730 point total. The junior finished in fourth place, just ahead of teammate,
Lacy Wilkins' 2,702 points. The top 12 point totals at the end of the regular season qualify for the GNAC Championships.
Blair Street finished second in the women's 60 meters with a time of 8.13, breaking the school record, and hitting a GNAC provisional qualifying mark. The freshman eclipsed Erika Halle's 2010 time of 8.15 for the new school record.
Shelby Martinell won the women's 60-meter hurdles with a new school-record time of 9.71. She bested Cassie Holm's previous record of 9.87 set in 2009. It was a provisional-qualifying GNAC mark.
Sarena Underwood came in second at 9.82.
Mary Owen and
Melanie Bock placed second and third in the 3,000 meters.
On the men's side,
Tanner Rottrup came in second in the shot put. The senior's top toss of 15.48 meters (50 feet, 9 inches). That mark easily auto-qualified Rottrup for the GNAC Championships, and was just shy of a NCAA Div. II National Championship provisional mark.

Tyson Vanderby placed fourth in the 3,000 meters. The senior's time of 9:02.00 was just shy of
Brian Potter's school-record time of 9:01.15. The top 16 times at the end of the regular season qualify for the GNAC Championships.
Drew Galahan came in second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:01.38.
Rusty Ontiveros narrowly missed a conference provisional mark in the high jump. The sophomore's top mark was 1.78 meters (5 feet, 10 inches).
