Billings, Mont. – Despite out playing Northwest Nazarene for the majority of the match, the Montana State Billings men's soccer team was unable to capture the victory. The Yellowjackets had their best shot output of the season but unfortunately could not find success and fell 2-0 to the Crusaders.
With their post-season hopes in the balance, MSUB came out full of energy in their final regular season match. The Yellowjackets dominated possession the whole match, but it was Northwest Nazarene's efficiency that would be the determining factor.
The Yellowjackets started their attack early and kept their offensive pressure up all afternoon. In total MSUB took 38 shots with 15 being on target.
Northwest Nazarene's goalkeeper Alfredo Ontiveros played great all match as he made quality saves consistently throughout the contest, finishing with 11 total.
Legofi Crawford started the attack for the Jackets taking three straight shots within the first four minutes of the half. One landed on target but was saved by Ontiveros. Following a foul on MSUB, the Crusaders regained possession at 18:30 and forced a corner kick.
At 19:05 Jon Curry put the ball in play and Evan McNiel chipped in a header from three yards out to give Northwest Nazarene the early 1-0 lead. The Crusaders took their last shot of the half at 22:11.
From the 27
th minute until the end of the half, the Yellowjackets took 10 shots. While Crawford,
Conner Moe,
Thomas Chameraud and
Blair Stevenson landed shots on target they were unable to find the net. Northwest Nazarene entered the break ahead 1-0.
The second half was very similar to the preceding half with MSUB controlling possession and constantly putting pressure on the Crusaders backline. After a barrage of shots from the Jackets, Northwest Nazarene dealt another crucial blow in the 69
th minute.
At 69:36 Jaime Torres scored a breakaway goal putting the ball in the ride side of the net to give the Crusaders a 2-0 advantage.
Fighting to the very end, the Yellowjackets had five of their 14 shot attempts in the later minutes of the contest land on goal but unfortunately could not find success. Northwest Nazarene went ahead to capture the 2-0.
“Today was a nightmare for us, we had two big claims for penalties for handball in the first half and our players didn't think their first goal crossed the line,” stated head coach Dan McNally. “On top of that we missed five or six clear chances where we should have scored. I don't think we have ever dominated a GNAC game so completely in the last six years.”
MSUB outshot Northwest Nazarene 38-4 and held the 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Yellowjackets finished the season 11-5-2 overall and third in the GNAC with a 7-5-2 mark.
“We have had a good season overall, our seniors have been fantastic,” said McNally. “When the dust settles on what happened today they will look back with pride on their careers.”
