Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings took a slight break from their conference play as they squared off against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Wednesday afternoon. The Yellowjackets defeated the Hardrockers 2-1 with a late second half goal to secure their ninth win of the season.

With Wednesday's victory, MSUB surpassed their 2011 win total and secured their fourth winning season in six years.

The Yellowjackets controlled possession for the majority of the match; and took their highest shot and shot on goal totals of the year, with 33 and 17 respectively. MSUB's attack put heavy pressure on the Hardrockers defense all afternoon. Landon Horst took the first shot attempt for MSUB that landed on target at 10:36. S.D. Mines goal keeper Cole Smith had a solid showing on the day as he denied Horst's attempt en route to registering 10 saves.

MSUB's early offensive would benefit in the 15th minute as senior co-captain Thomas Chameraud gave a nice pass between Hardrockers' defenders to Chad Ward and he chipped in a shot from three yards out, giving the Jackets the quick 1-0 lead. The score marked Ward's second goal of the season.

The Yellowjackets stayed heavy on the attack as they outshot their opponent 8-2 between the 16th and 38th minute. Sam Butterworth, Chameraud, Kyle Emerick and Horst all landed shots on target but unfortunately did not find success.

Following an offsides penalty at 39:51 that gave possession to S.D. Mines, they received a penalty kick at 41:13 after a MSUB foul. Michael McGraw successfully scored the equalizer goal, notching the score at a 1-1 tie.

Butterworth countered for the Jackets at 41:53 with a shot on goal but Smith came up with another nice save attempt and the teams entered the break even on the scoreboard.

Feeling that they were not playing to their full potential, MSUB picked up the tempo and increased their already strong attack. MSUB took 13 shots from the start of the second half until the 71st minute. While six shots were on target, the Yellowjackets were not able to capitalize on their opportunities.

MSUB's midfielders and backline played great as they constantly won challenges and kept the offense in rhythm all afternoon.

S.D. Mines took their first shot of the half at 78:48, but the attempt was off target landing wide left.

As it seemed as if the contest would go into extra minutes, MSUB would find success in the 84th minute. In a huddle around the goal keeper, where both teams battled for possession, senior co-captain Conner Moe received the ball and made a pass while falling down to Chameraud. Effectively chipping in a shot from three yards out, Chameraud putting the Yellowjackets back ahead 2-1, marking his fourth score of 2012.

Chameraud's score would prove to be the game winner, as S.D. Mines took a shot in the 89th minute but the attempt landed wide.

“We won the game and that's the positive from today,” stated head coach McNally. “We missed so many chances and in the end it took Chameraud to step up and get the winner late on. We have secured a winning season and that is the result of a lot of hard work over the past 12 months on and off the field by the players and coaches.”

Eoin Hurley made his 15th consecutive start of the season and recorded his eighth win. He finished with one save on the day.

MSUB is now 9-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Yellowjackets will switch back to their conference slate on Saturday, Oct. 27 as they play their rematch against the University of Mary at 2:00 p.m.
