Men’s Soccer Looks to Continue Their Momentum

Billings, Mont. – The Montana State Billings men's soccer team put together two great team performances last weekend. Following their Thursday match where they defeated Western Washington with an overtime goal; the Yellowjackets battled the No. 3 nationally ranked Simon Fraser Clan to a 0-0 double overtime draw. MSUB will look to carry this momentum into this week's contests.

The Yellowjackets are currently 8-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. In the Oct. 23 NSCAA/Continental Tire west region poll, MSUB comes in at the No. 10 slot. MSUB started last weekend with a 2-1 overtime win over the Vikings in the MSUB Kicks Cancer event.

Following up this performance the Jackets forced Simon Fraser to take eight out of 13 shots off target. Sophomore Eoin Hurley recorded three saves on the day as the Jackets tied the clan after 110 minutes of play.

Co-captain Conner Moe received the Red Lion GNAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week award and senior forward Thomas Sheets received Red Lion GNAC Player-of-the-Week honorable mention honors for their efforts. Moe scored a goal on a penalty kick versus Western Washington and led the back line to turn in two solid performances where they neutralized both opponents offense.

Sheets scored the game winning overtime goal against the Vikings, as he now leads the team in goals scored with four on the season.

Next on the agenda for the Yellowjackets are two home events this week. Their out of conference match against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will be on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m. While the Hardrockers' winning percentage is are below .500, they have talent and cannot be taken lightly.

“We are on a good run at home and we will be looking to pick up another win in the region,” stated head coach Dan McNally. “It will be a difficult game but I am sure our players will be ready for the challenge.”

A key component to defeating S.D. Mines will be for MSUB to effectively capitalize on their attacks, as the Hardrockers have given up 32 goals this season.

After their fourth and final out of conference game, the Yellowjackets will switch back to their GNAC schedule for a rematch with the University of Mary on Saturday Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m. The Marauders are currently 4-8-3 overall and 3-6-2 in conference play.

In their first matchup this season, Landon Horst scored a game winning overtime goal to lift MSUB over Mary 2-1. To avoid having this outcome reversed, the backline will need to limit quality looks by Rory Pratt. He leads the Marauders in total points with 15 and goals scored with seven.

“We always have very close games against the University of Mary,” stated McNally. “We won in overtime at their place and I think the game on Saturday will be just as competitive.”

Hurley will also need to continue to his solid play, as he currently has 47 saves on the year and four shutouts.

With four regular season games remaining, the Yellowjackets will need to take advantage of every opportunity to make a push for post season play.
