Men’s Soccer Battle Nationally Ranked Clan to Double Overtime Draw

Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings men's soccer team put together a great team effort in their Saturday match at the 11th Annual Futbol Frenzy. Facing the No. 3 team in the nation, the Yellowjackets battled Simon Fraser to a 0-0 draw in double overtime.
 
MSUB came in the match riding the momentum from a two game winning streak. Saturday's match was a defensive orientated contest. Starters Matt Brink, Cameron Lee and Conner Moe, and reserve Chris Hawkins played great on the backline forcing eight of the 13 shots to land off target.
 
The first half didn't see much offense from both teams. From the start to 26th minute there were only six total shots. Simon Fraser's Chris Bargohlz landed two shots on target that were saved by sophomore goal keeper Eoin Hurley. Kyle Emerick's attempt in the 15th minute was also on target but a Clan defender made a nice save on the play.
 
Offside penalties on both teams halted several attack attempts, and the Jackets and Simon Fraser only took one more shot attempt each to end the first half. Landon Horst's attempt landed on target and was saved by the Clan's Hide Ozawa.
 
MSUB and Simon Fraser entered the break tied 0-0.
 
The offense picked up in the second half, with Simon Fraser outshooting the Yellowjackets 3-1 within the first 14 minutes of the half. All of the Clan's attempts were off target while the lone attempt for MSUB by Chad Ward was on goal. Ozawa made a save on the play.
 
Possession shifted between teams with the Clan holding a slight advantage. MSUB's defense played great and did not break when facing Simon Fraser's attacks.
 
With time fading, both teams put together quality attacks but were unable to come away with success. From the 78th minute until the end of regulation the Clan took three shots compared to the Yellowjackets' two attempts. Only Colin Jacques' attempt at 80:36 was on target, but an MSUB defender made a great save on the play.
 
At the end of regulation MSUB was even with their nationally ranked counterpart.
 
The first overtime period was controlled by defense. Ward's attempt at 97:11 made it on target but a Simon Fraser defender made a save on the play.
 
The Jackets' offense went on the attack first with Blair Stevenson taking a shot on goal attempt at 103:50. Simon Fraser's defense would remain solid and came up with another team save on the play.
 
Joel Malouf took the final shot attempt for Simon Fraser at 109:14 but MSUB's defense denied the attempt, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
 
“We were missing four starters today and to get this result was fantastic,” stated head coach Dan McNally. “I thought the game was very even but we had our chances to win. I am so proud of the team today. We played with so much heart and passion. Every player was outstanding.”
 
Hurley recorded three saves on the day. While the Clan held the 13-9 advantage in total shots, both teams had five shots on target.
 
The Yellowjackets are now 8-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the GNAC. Their next match with be an out of conference bout against South Dakota School of Mines on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m.
