BILLINGS, Mont. -- Freshman
Kyle Emerick helped the Montana State University Billings men's soccer team bust out of its scoring slump with a two-goal performance that led the Yellowjackets to a 2-1 victory over the University of Mary Thursday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field.
The victory was the first of the season for the Yellowjackets who are now 1-2-0 on the season and dropped Mary to 0-2-1 on the year.
Goals in the 28th and 49th minutes helped the Jackets recover from an early 1-0 deficit after Aaron Mcelwee took a turnover from the Jackets and delivered a shot past 25 yards into the net. The goal came quickly in the fifth minute of the game.
The Yellowjackets stayed patient in game that would get chippy throughout, and kept putting balls in the box and on frame.
The patience paid off for Emerick as his first goal came on a deflection of his initial shot. The freshman had a one on one opportunity with Mary keeper Michael Frenzel who slid out to defend the ball, but Emerick maintained possession and put the ball into the back of the net.
MSUB came out of the half on the same pace it had gone into it as they quickly got off shots on Frenzel. As
Thomas Chameraud sent a through ball into the middle of the pitch, Emerick picked it up and took Frenzel to his left, sneaking it past and into the lower left side.
Emerick took just three shots, all on goal, while
Garion Holian and
Thomas Sheets both registered five shots apiece and each had two on goal to lead the Jackets in shots.
Keeper
Eoin Hurley picked up his first victory of his young career, as the freshman made four saves on the day and saw a total of 13 shots from the Marauders.
The Yellowjackets out shot Mary 16-13 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Frenzel made seven saves in the losing effort.
The Yellowjackets will be back in action Saturday afternoon as they play host to Colorado Christian University with that match scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Fans can watch the game via web stream and live stats on the msubsports.com website.
