BILLINGS, Mont. -- In a match that was played under windy conditions Wednesday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field, the Montana State Billings men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to non-conference foe University of Great Falls.
The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 2-7-0 on the year and was the fifth consecutive defeat the Jackets have seen. The Argos improved to 7-2-0 on the year as Great Falls looks to be establishing themselves as a top tier NAIA team.
“We played badly today,” said head coach Dan McNally. “At times we have played well this season and lost, but today we got what we deserved. We haven't been in this position since 2005 in terms of our record. We are all hurting right now, but we must pick ourselves up and prepare for Saturday's match.”
The Yellowjackets were outshot 17-9 in the match and allowed eight shots on goal by the Argos, while taking just two themselves. Great Falls also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks, four of which were taken in the second half.
Manuel Espinoza put the Argos on the board early as he took the ball away from a Jackets defender and broke toward the goal. His shot came from 15 yards out and was placed into the lower shelf in the 8
th minute of the match.
Espinoza was in on the second goal as well as he gave a through ball to Ryan O'Neil who fired a shot from just outside the box and into the lower right corner during the 36
th minute to give the Argos a 2-0 lead at the half.
UGF continued the scoring midway through the second half as O'Neil was in the right place at the right time, tapping in a rebound off a saved Christian Johansen shot in the 63
rd minute.
Thomas Sheets tried to keep the Jackets alive when
Peter Davies fed the ball into Sheets on a low pass that he cranked into the back of the net from 10 yards out to bring the match to 3-1.
However, there was just too much UGF offense as they countered late in the 76
th minute when David Jimenez took a pass from Johansen and beat two MSUB defenders, putting his shot into the bottom of the goal.
The Yellowjackets will be back in action this weekend when they host Northwest Nazarene Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The game can be seen on the web or fans can watch live stats, both can be found on the msubsports.com homepage or schedule page.
