Interview with Coach McNally
BILLINGS, Mont. -- Twice the Montana State University Billings men's soccer team found itself in a hole, and twice senior
Garion Holian stepped up and brought the Yellowjackets back, he also did it two more times to help MSUB beat Colorado Christian 4-2 Saturday at Yellowjacket Field.
Holian tied the MSUB men's record for goals in a game, matching Brian Palmer against Morningside on Oct. 20, 2001, and Thomas Pertuit against Vanguard on Sept. 2, 2004. Holian tallied two goals during play and two coming on penalty kicks.
The Yellowjackets trailed 1-0 early as Graham Delano took a cross at the top of the box and lined a shot into the upper left corner, just out of reach of MSUB keeper
Spencer Miele.
MSUB would answer back in the 14
th minute when Holian took a ball from
Joshua Marocchi on a counter attack and drove the ball into the back of the net from 18 yards out for his first goal of the season and of the day.
The Cougars regained the lead just 1:16 later when Delano hit a penalty kick after an MSUB penalty. It was Delano's third goal of the season.
Holian countered just before the half for the Yellowjackets when he took a penalty kick and converted it not once, but twice. His first attempt was called off due to movement from one of the Yellowjackets, but Holian once again stepped up and placed the ball beautifully into the lower right corner.
With the game knotted at 2-2, MSUB took the lead for the first time in the match during the 70
th minute as Marocchi and
Clifton Thomas connected a pair of passes and found Holian in the middle where he finished with a shot to the keeper's right.
Holian's fourth goal came in the 74th minute on yet another penalty kick. Again he drove the ball home and past the keeper to seal the match.
The Yellowjackets held a staggering 25-4 edge in shots and owned a 4-1 edge on corner kicks. Cougar keeper David Ilgenfritz (0-3-1) made six saves in the loss, while Miele made one in taking the win (1-0-0).
MSUB now prepares for the conference season as they take to the road for matches at Saint Martin's University on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 4:30 p.m. and at Seattle Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m.
