BILLINGS, Mont. -- The Montana State Billings men's soccer team got two goals from defenders and the game-winner from senior Tyler Moriarty as the Yellowjackets were victorious in a 3-2 season finale match with intra-city rival Rocky Mountain College Sunday afternoon on senior day at Yellowjacket Field.

MSUB, who got head coach Dan McNally his 60th career victory at the school, finished the season at .500 with an 8-8-2 record overall. The Yellowjackets were 2-7-0 just five weeks ago and finished the second half of the season 6-1-2.

“I thought we controlled the game today and deserved to win,” McNally said in the postgame interview. “We missed a PK and they scored off of two deflections, which kept it close. I'm very happy with our season and the great run we had in our last nine games.”

In what was a tight match throughout most of the first half, MSUB had a golden opportunity with 10 seconds left before the break. The Jackets moved in on goal with a breakaway when Rocky keeper Joachim Soderstrom came out and tackled the MSUB player to earn a direct red card and force his team to play a man down the rest of the match.

Earning a penalty kick against a cold Sean Flynn, MSUB sent senior Garion Holian to the mark for the chance to take the lead. Holian struck the ball well, but Flynn guessed correctly as he dove to his left to make the stop and keep the score even headed into the break.

The second half provided all the fireworks as the Battlin' Bears began the scoring in the 51st when Oliver Gore took the ball off a deflected pass and cracked a shot from 32 yards out, bending it just inside the far right post. The goal was Gore's ninth of the season.

Just under seven minutes later, Thomas Chameraud sent a free kick from 38 yards out into the top of the six yard box where freshman Isaac Kerr was positioned for the header just over Flynn's outstretched arms. The goal was Kerr's third of the season and Chameraud's first assist of the day.

The Yellowjackets took the lead in the 67th minute when junior Thomas Sheets connected with Conner Moe on a cross that Moe finished with a shot into a wide-open left side of the goal. It was Moe's first goal of the season and Sheets' third assist.

Gore and Rocky would strike again to level the match in the 77th minute as he took a free kick from the far corner of the 18 yard box and placed it perfectly into the right corner of the goal.

Moriarty's game-winner came in the 81st minute when Chameraud took a corner kick on the far side and found Moriarty in the box where he sent a header on goal and the ball deflected off the crossbar and just over the line for his second goal of the season. The assist was Chameraud's team-leading seventh of the year.

The Yellowjackets dominated the shot count 14-6 and 5-3 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at 6-6, while freshman keeper Eoin Hurley improved his record to 7-6-2 on the year, making one save in the match.

The Yellowjackets bid farewell to seniors Garion Holian, Tyler Moriarty, Peter Davies, Nathan Yamaguchi, Marco Rosales and Aaron Reay prior to the game with senior day festivities.

“I'd like to thank the seniors for their efforts this year and throughout their careers,” said McNally.

The Yellowjackets now move into the offseason after finishing fourth in the conference race. The Jackets will return a wealth of young talent that now has experience and will get eight of their eleven starters back for next season.

“We have a lot to look forward to next season,” McNally finished. “Our facility will be finished with this new phase and the return of eight starters will help a lot.”
