Men’s Soccer Gets 1-0 Victory over Mary in Shortened Match

Box Score Box Score

BISMARCK, N.D. -- A header by Isaac Kerr in the 23rd minute proved to be the game-winner as the Montana State Billings men's soccer team earned their first road victory of the season Thursday evening, defeating the University of Mary at the Community Bowl 1-0 in a match shortened due to lightening.

The Yellowjackets improved to 4-7-0 on the year as they earned back-to-back victories for the first time this season since a pair of wins over Mary and Colorado Christian on Sept. 8 and 10. The Marauders fell to 0-8-2 on the year with the loss.

“It was a good win for us tonight in difficult conditions,” said head coach Dan McNally. We played really well in the first half and were able to create a lot of chances. We really should've been up two or three goals going into the half, but we didn't convert. I thought the second half was extremely tough because of the strong winds. Mary also put a lot of long balls into the 18, but we did well to defend the ball and keep it out of goal. Isaac played very well tonight with the goal, but his defensive play was superb.”

The Jackets controlled much of the first half and broke through on the board when Clifton Thomas sent a corner kick into the box where Kerr got his head on it and put the ball past Mary keeper Michael Frenzel at 22:08. The goal was the first of the season for Kerr and Thomas' third assist.

Strong winds and driving rain started to move into the area late in the second half. The referees, coaches and school officials met, deciding to end the match due to the lightening in the area after a 50 minute delay in the match.

At the time the match was called, MSUB held a 14-4 advantage in shots and an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal as MSUB keeper Eoin Hurley registered his third win of the season (3-5-0). Corner kicks were even at 6-6 as three cards were issued during the match.

MSUB will remain in Bismarck to take on the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday in a neutral site match. The contest will kick off at 11 a.m. local time.
