Holian’s Overtime Goal Lifts Jackets over Crusaders, 4-3 OT

Box Score

NAMPA, Idaho -- Senior Garion Holian ripped a shot from eight yards out just inside the far right post in the 100th minute as the Montana State Billings men's soccer team triumphed over Northwest Nazarene 4-3 Saturday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

“We had an unbelievable start to the game scoring two goals inside the first four minutes,” said MSUB head coach Dan McNally. “We played really well in the first half and looked comfortable going into the half up 3-1. I have to give Northwest Nazarene a lot of credit; they played great in the second half and put us under a lot of pressure. They had the momentum going into overtime at 3-3. I'm really proud of the guys for showing tremendous spirit when our season looked to be over at 2-7, but we've fought all the way back to respectability.”

The Yellowjackets, playing their final conference match of the season, moved their record to 7-8-2 on the season and finished 3-5-5 in the GNAC, while Northwest Nazarene fell to 6-10-1 on the year and 1-9-0 in the conference.

MSUB began the match on fire as Thomas Sheets scored his seventh goal of the season in the second minute, scoring on a header inside the far post on a cross from the left side by Thomas Chameraud.

Holian scored the second goal of the afternoon in the 4th minute when he sent an absolute rocket from 45-yards out and snuck the ball just under the crossbar for his sixth goal of the season.

The Crusaders cut into the Jacket lead in the 23rd minute when Stephen Marshall scored his third goal of the year on a penalty kick.

Seven minutes later the Yellowjackets extended the lead back to 3-1 when Sheets scored his second goal of the game on a sliding shot from four-yards out on a cross from the right side by Holian.

Coming out of the break the Crusaders scored in the 50th minute when Christian Adamson scored on a header from just outside the far post off of Daniel Starbuck's free kick from 40-yards out.

The tempo slowed until the 78th minute when Marshall again scored on another penalty kick for NNU, tying the match at 3-3 to force the overtime period.

In the overtime period, Hurley made a great save on a shot by John DiLulo in the 97th minute to keep the match going. Three minutes later was when Holian took a ball from Peter Davies and scored the game-winner for his second goal of the day and his seventh of the season.

“Two factors in the overtime for us were Eoin making a fantastic save and then two minutes later the ball went up to Garion and he scored a great goal,” McNally said. “Garion's overall performance today was top class, he had an excellent match.”

Hurley made four saves in earning the victory for the Yellowjackets who were outshot by NNU 13-10 in total shots and 7-6 in shots on goal. The Crusaders also held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks in the match.

The Yellowjackets will now return home for the season finale against cross-town rival Rocky Mountain College next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Yellowjacket Field.
