Box Score Box Score

BURNABY, B.C. -- The six-game unbeaten streak for the Montana State Billings men's soccer team came to an end Saturday afternoon at Terry Fox Field as the Jackets dropped a nail-biting 1-0 decision to the No.1 ranked Simon Fraser University Clan.

“I'm really proud of our team's effort today,” said head coach Dan McNally. “The guys were fantastic and they gave everything they had. Simon Fraser is quality this year, but we gave them a great game. We hit the post with two minutes left and Simon Fraser had to defend with desperation until the last second.”

The Yellowjackets dropped to 6-8-2 on the season and fell to 2-5-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Clan improved their unblemished mark to 14-0-0 on the year and are now 7-0-0 in the conference.

Simon Fraser scored the lone goal of the match in the 11th minute when Michael Winter took a cross from Matt Besuschko and headed the ball into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Cory Champney had an opportunity in the 38th minute to even the match, but Clan keeper Sheldon Steenhuis came up with the first of his two saves on the day.

The second half started off with fireworks as SFU's Chris Bargholz, already playing with a yellow card, was sent off at 47:35 allowing the Jackets to apply more pressure on the ball with the man advantage.

Thomas Chameraud nearly put the Jackets all square twice in the half. His first shot in the 80th minute was turned away by Steenhuis, but the second shot in the 89th minute got past the keeper but was denied by the post.

MSUB keeper Eoin Hurley played a great match for the Jackets, coming up with six saves on the day to keep MSUB in the hunt for the whole match.

Chameraud led the Jackets with two shots, while Champney, Isaac Kerr and Thomas Sheets all recorded one shot in the match.

The Jackets were outshot 18-5 in total shots and 8-2 in shots on goal, while the Clan held also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Yellowjackets will play their remaining GNAC match on the road next Saturday at Northwest Nazarene before finishing the season at home against Rocky Mountain College on Nov. 5.
