BILLINGS, Mont. -- The unbeaten streak was extended to five today for the Montana State University Billings men's soccer team as they earned a 2-2 draw with Saint Martin's University Saturday afternoon on a rain soaked Yellowjacket Field in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
The Yellowjackets saw their record improve to 5-7-2 overall and 1-4-2 in the GNAC after their second consecutive draw this week. The Saints' record improved to 4-7-2 overall and are now 2-5-2 in the conference.
“It was a great game today,” said MSUB head coach Dan McNally. “I'm disappointed that we couldn't finish the match off when we went ahead 2-1, but the guys worked really hard and we're still unbeaten in our last five. We have to take the positives into our next match at Western Washington next week.”
The Yellowjackets drew first blood in the 13
th minute when
Joshua Marocchi found a streaking
Garion Holian down the left side as the senior finished the play with a low hard shot into the lower right corner of the goal for his fifth goal of the year.
The Crusaders answered back in the 28
th minute when SMU's leading scorer, Xan Nixon, took a through ball and placed it top shelf, just out of the reach of MSUB keeper
Eoin Hurley. It was Nixon's seventh goal of the season as the assist went to CJ Chu.
MSUB struck in the second half at 62:30 when
Thomas Sheets cracked a shot from 20 yards out to beat JJ Olson after taking a pass from
Thomas Chameraud. The goal was Sheets' fifth of the season, tying him for the team lead with Holian.
The lead looked secure until the 88
th minute when Nixon was again in the right place as Spencer Salvador sent a corner kick into the box where Nixon finished with a shot into the upper right corner for the equalizer and his eighth goal of the year.
As the rain began to fall even harder in the overtime periods the Yellowjackets created opportunities but were unable to put the ball in the net. The Saints had a chance to end the match in the first overtime as well, but Hurley came up with a huge save and then a team save was made to keep the match level.
Hurley made three saves to pull his record to 4-5-2 on the year, while Olson was credited with four saves, moving his record to 4-6-1 on the year.
The Saints held a 15-13 advantage in shots and a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. MSUB also recorded one less corner kick at 6-7.
The Yellowjackets will now take to the road for a pair of conference clashes with Western Washington on Thursday night and with No.2 Simon Fraser on Saturday.
