BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State Billings men's soccer team is scheduled to face the University of Mary Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Bismarck, North Dakota, in a non-conference match. The Yellowjackets enter the week with a 5-5-1 record overall. The Marauders enter with a 0-11 record overall, including a 2-0 loss to MSUB in Billings earlier this season.
The Yellowjackets are looking to snap a three-game skid as they haven't won since a 3-2 victory at Western Washington Sept. 25. The three-game losing streak is the longest since 2008.
Leading the way for the Yellowjackets this season is senior, captain, Chris Andre who leads the team with six goals and three assists for 15 points. He leads the team and is ranked third in the league in shots with 36, while he ranks second in the league in points and second in goals.
Second on the team in scoring is sophomore Thomas Sheets who has three goals and one assist for seven points. He is second in shots with 27 and third in shots on goal with 12. Junior Peter Davies is third in points and is tied with Andre and senior Ryan Covey for the lead in assists with three each. Junior Garion Holian is third on the team in goals with two and fourth in points with four. Holian is second on the team in shots on goal with 15.
Between the posts, the Yellowjackets are led by senior Matt Mitchell who has played and started in all 11 games. He has logged 1010:00 minutes with a 1.51 goals against average. Mitchell has 47 saves and a .734 save percentage. He is 5-5-1 on the year with two shutouts. Mitchell ranks third in goals against average and third in shutouts in the league.
As a team, the Jackets have scored 16 goals with 12 assists for 44 points. MSUB has fired 152 shots for a .105 average and 76 shots on goal for a .500 clip. The Jackets also are 2 for 2 in penalty kicks. The opponents have scored 17 goals with 13 assists for 47 points. They have attempted 134 shots (.127) and 65 shots on goal for a .485 average. The opposition is 1 for 2 in penalty kicks.
The Marauders enter the match looking for their first victory of the season. Despite being 0-11, University of Mary has been competitive in just about every match. The Marauders have lost seven games by one goal.
Leading the way this season is Matt Frost who has scored three goals and one assist for seven points. He is third on the team in shots with 10 and is second in shots on goal with five. Four other Marauders each have scored one goal, while Ryan Harper leads the team in assists with two. Nikola Nikolic leads the team with 22 shots and 11 shots on goal.
In goal, the Marauders are led by Billings native, Derek Lupak, who has played in eight games and started seven. He has logged a team-high 745:11 minutes and has a 2.05 goals against average with 51 saves. Michael Frenzel also has seen action in four games with two starts.
As a team, the Marauders have scored eight goals with seven assists for 23 points. They have 97 shots (.082) with 44 on goal (.454) and are 1 for 2 in penalty kicks. Conversely, the opponents have scored 26 goals with 25 assists for 77 points. They have 198 shots (.131) with 94 on goal (.475) and are 2 for 2 in penalty kicks.
The Jackets won a 2-0 decision in Billings Sept. 18. Andre led the way with two goals in the match as the Yellowjackets bounced back from a tough loss at Colorado State-Pueblo.
MSUB leads the all-time series 18-5 and has won 12-straight. The Yellowjackets lead 12-1 in Billings and also lead 6-4 in Bismarck. However, three of the past six trips to Bismarck have gone into overtime with the Yellowjackets winning all three. Mary's last win in the series came on Nov. 1, 2002, with a 1-0 win in Bismarck.
The Yellowjackets then continue on the road as they return to conference action Oct. 21 and Oct. 23, at Saint Martin's and Seattle Pacific, respectively. The Jackets then return home for four-straight to close out the regular season beginning with an Oct. 28 match versus Western Washington at 12:30 p.m. at Yellowjacket Field.
