Final Stats
HELENA, Mont. -- The Montana State University Billings women's golf team finished fourth out of nine teams Tuesday afternoon at the Carroll College Invitational, completing the two-day tournament with a three-round total of 1,010 (338-346-326).
"I am proud of our women," said head coach Shawn O'Brien. "We had no expectations as a team, except to go out and play our best. The experience from this tournament will help all five girls for the future and I'm looking forward to our next big tournament at RMC this weekend."
The Yellowjackets were led in scoring by freshman
Cayley Fish, shooting a three-round total of 244 (80-87-77) and placing ninth overall.
Katie Fish placed 12th overall with a 247 (81-87-79).
"Both Cayley and
Katie Fish played well the last two days," O'Brien said. "Every tournament is going to help them gain experience as they are only freshman. It is nice to see them compete as we continue to raise the bar for both of them."
Sophomore
Melissa Saken finished16th with a 253 (88-81-84), while freshman
Mariah Cleveland was tied for 26th with a 270 and sophomore
BreAnna Cameron was 30th with a 272.
"Melissa had a great second round considering the wind was gusting from 40-55 mph throughout most of the round," said O'Brien.
The Yellowjackets finished behind tournament champion Westminister College (Utah) who shot a 940, followed by Lewis-Clark College with a 949 and Rocky Mountain College with a 1,003.
Freshman
Eric Gravbrot played on the men's side as an individual. Gravbrot had a two-day, three-round total of 215 (68-75-72) and tied for medalist honors. He was defeated in a three-way playoff by Carroll's Jim Mee on the fourth hole.
"Eric had an amazing tournament," O'Brien said. "He started off with a great opening round, and followed that with another great round despite a harsh wind. He was very focused for all 36 holes the first day. In the final round he was even more mentally prepared and I'm positive his metal preparation led to his co-medalist honor."
Gravbrot hit a miracle shot on the first hole of the playoff to keep his chances alive. After his second shot bounced off the cart path and landed by a bench, Gravbrot had a to chip over the bench and a sand trap to get the ball on the green for a birdie opportunity.
The shot cleared all of the obstacles and landed within a foot of the cup for an easy tap-in. Gravbrot matched Mees until the fourth playoff hole when Gravbrot took par on the hole and Mees birdied.
The women's golf team will next play at the Rocky Mountain College Invitational later this weekend, while the men's team will be in Bellingham, Wash., for the Western Washington Invitational.
