RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Montana State University Billings men's soccer team were defeated 7-3 by Texas A&M International University, marking their first loss of the season in a match that ended early due to lightning.
The Yellowjackets (3-1) found themselves on the wrong side of a high scoring affair, with the Dustdevils (1-2) exploding for seven goals in the game. The Jackets battled hard, getting three goals of their own, but were unable to match the Dustdevils' output.
Texas A&M International opened the scoring early, grabbing their first goal in the second minute of the game. MSUB threatened to respond after, and were rewarded for their efforts when
Ty Vohland scored in the 24
th minute to tie things 1-1. But the Dustdevils scored three more goals in the game to take a 4-1 lead into the break, and added another goal shortly after the beginning of the second half.
The Jackets were able to grab a few goals back as the second half went on. Vohland scored his second goal of the match in the 65
th minute on a header in the box, and just three minutes later,
Marc-Paul Renaud would score a similar goal to make it a two-goal game. It wouldn't be enough to make a full comeback though, and two more goals from the Dustdevils were able to see things out, before lightning forced an early end to the game in the 82
nd minute.
Vohland finished with the first multi-goal game of his career, while placing all three of his shots on goal. Both the Yellowjackets second half goals were assisted by
Bjarne Fedkenhauer.
THE BUZZ: Vohland was selected as the Intermountain Health Player of the Game… His brace today moved Vohland up to four goals on the season, the most of any player in the GNAC so far this season… Fedkenhauer's two assists were the most in a single game for his career, and pushed the sophomore's total up to three this season… Renaud's goal was the first of his MSUB career.
UP NEXT: The Yellowjackets remain on the road next week, heading north of the border for a pair of games in Burnaby, B.C. Their first game is against Colorado Mesa University on September 14, with kickoff set for 3:30 PM (4:30 MST). Live video will be
