BURNABY, B.C. – The Montana State University Billings men's soccer team were unable to grab the victory from Colorado Mesa in their neutral site matchup, falling 2-1 in their first of two games this week.
The Yellowjackets (3-2) took an early first half lead, and held on for a while, but were unable to shut the door when a pair of second half goals from the Mavericks (3-2) helped to push them to a victory. While the Mavericks fired 16 shots, nine on goal, the MSUB attack was able to keep pace, firing 12 shots of their own, putting six on frame.
Just seven minutes into the game, the Yellowjackets were able to grab a lead off the foot of
Marc-Paul Renaud. The freshman found his foot to a ball played by
Ty Vohland, which he controlled before powering it into the bottom right corner, helping MSUB get off to a quick start. While Colorado Mesa grew into the game, getting opportunities of their own, excellent goalkeeping from
Jeremi Campagnolo was able to keep the Mavericks scoreless, while the Yellowjackets had multiple quality chances denied by Colorado Mesa goalkeeper Diego Chavez.
The Mavericks would turn their fortunes around in the second half, however. Six minutes after the restart, Alec Fronapfel would score off a deflected save, evening the game up. And just four minutes later, it would be Fronapfel again who scored in the bottom left corner, giving the Mavericks the lead. The Jackets continued to fight hard in a physical second half, where both teams received fouls aplenty, but were unable to find the equalizer, dropping their second game in a row.
Renaud put two of his three shots on goal in the match, while
Ryan Hanley placed all of his three shots on target.
Kamden Beck had two shots in the match, with one on goal, while
Ryushiro Morita had a pair of shots as well. Vohland finished with the lone assist for the Jackets. Campagnolo finished with seven total saves.
THE BUZZ: Renaud was selected as the Intermountain Health Player of the Game… Vohland's assist pushed his points total on the season to nine (four goals, one assist), most in the GNAC… Renaud's goal was his second of the season, making him the second MSUB player with multiple goals on the year… Campagnolo's seven saves were a season high.
