Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Yellowjacket men's soccer team (3-2-1) finished their non-conference slate with a 1-1 tie against Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (2-2-1).
The 'Jackets got off to a quick start as
Ty Vohland scored to grab a 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute. Off an errant first touch by the Skyhawks, Vohland quickly gained possession from a ricochet off
Callum Bryan and had a perfect strike from beyond the 18-yard box. Vohland left the Skyhawks keeper frozen, as he put the 'Jackets on top to gain momentum.
The match went scoreless for the remainder of the half as the 'Jackets went into the break with a 1-0 lead. Although the 'Jackets led at the half, the Skyhawks led in overall shots, shots on goal and corner kicks after 45 minutes.
Jeremi Campagnolo has kept his team in the lead, saving 2 shots including an impressive save off a Skyhawk corner kick leading to a header in the middle of the box.
The second half started with even play between both teams, adjusting to each other's style of play. The 'Jackets were the first team with a shot in the second half as
Josh Nalletamby missed just high on the goal. The Skyhawks kept pressing, knowing they needed a goal to, at least, escape with one point. The pressure by the visiting team allowed them to tie it up at 1-1; the goal was scored by Anton Hjalmarsson.
With 15 minutes left, both teams were knotted 1-1, similar to the 'Jackets 1-0 win last year in Mesa, Colorado – another neutral site contest. An exciting finish was in play for the physical game, as both teams were hoping to go into conference play with a winning record.
With only a few seconds left,
Kamden Beck had a potential shot on goal to send his team to victory, but it luckily deflected off a Fort Lewis player to go right above goal. The Yellowjackets had a strong showing in Canada to wrap up conference play as they finished with 1 point in a tough battle against Fort Lewis, a quality team from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
THE BUZZ: Ty Vohland was named the Intermountain Health Player of the Game as he scored the lone goal for the 'Jackets.
UP NEXT: The Yellowjackets will have an off weekend before heading into GNAC play at Western Oregon University on Saturday, September 30
th at 7 PM.
