BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings men's soccer team picked up a victory in their second to last game of the season, taking down Simon Fraser University 2-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
The Yellowjackets (5-7-3, 2-5-2 GNAC) began their final week of games this season on a high note, taking down the conference leading Red Leafs (10-4-2, 7-2-1 GNAC). A pair of goals would give the 'Jackets just enough cushion to overcome a late red card and subsequent goal from Simon Fraser.
The first half opened with the team's trading shots equally, each finishing the first 45 minutes with five shots. The difference was the 'Jackets were able to place those shots on target, with three of their attempts going on goal while Simon Fraser failed to place a shot on goal in the half. The home team would finally break through in the 32
nd minute, when following a cross from
Josh Nalletamby, the ball would find it's way to
Sam Kemmer, who struck the ball home for his first collegiate goal, giving MSUB a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The story would be the same in the early parts of the second half, with MSUB continuing to challenge the SFU goalkeeper, while the Red Leafs struggled to put shots on goal. The 'Jackets would be rewarded once more following a piece of incredible passing, resulting in their second goal when
Callum Bryan slotted the ball home, with
Kamden Beck and
Marc-Paul Renaud each being credited with an assist in the buildup. But the game would shift when MSUB was forced down to ten men, following a red card for a handball in the box. The result of which would be a Simon Fraser penalty kick and goal, halving the Yellowjackets lead and setting up a tense final 13 minutes of play. But the Yellowjackets would defend soundly, and see out the contest to pick up the home win.
Bryan's goal was his lone shot in the match, as was Kemmer's.
Bjarne Fedkenhauer finished with two shots and one shot on goal, while
Kolja Thomas put his one shot on goal. While only finishing with one save, goalkeeper
Jeremi Campagnolo made a number of key interventions late, with his collecting of corners and crosses shutting down the Red Leaf's attack.
THE BUZZ: Bryan was selected as the Intermountain Health Player of the Game… the goal was the senior's third of the season, and the eighth of his MSUB career… The assists for Nalletamby, Beck, and Renaud were their first of the seasons, and the first of Nalletamby and Renaud's MSUB careers…
