DICKINSON, N.D. – The Montana State University Billings sprinters and jumpers ended the regular season on a high note, plus throwers
Braden Anderson and
Forrest Cross moved up the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings at Dickinson State University's Last Chance Meet on Thursday.
"Overall, I think we did pretty well," MSUB track and field head coach
Jonathan Woehl said. "I think there could have been a few things that went better, but overall I think we had a good meet. I thought the 100 and the 200 meters went well for the women, plus
Favor Okere,
Madeline Severson and
Madison Thompson all PRed in their jumps."
Competing against fellow D2 schools Minot State and the University of Mary, amongst others, the MSUB men's team placed fifth out of six teams. A women's team score was unavailable at press time.
In the throwing events, sophomore
Braden Anderson placed second in the shot put with a lifetime-best 14.42m (47-3) throw. Anderson came into the meet already in the GNAC and the MSUB top 10 rankings in the event, but he improved to seventh in the GNAC and ninth all-time at MSUB at the Last Chance Meet. His teammate
Forrest Cross rebounded by winning the discus with a throw of 45.60m (149-6) – an improvement on his fourth-best mark in program history – which is the second-best mark in the conference so far.
As a group, the five jumpers accounted for seven new season-bests, including three new MSUB top-10 marks. High jumpers
Madeline Severson and
Favor Okere both cleared season-best heights of 1.50m and 1.90m, respectively – the latter of which ranks seventh all-time at MSUB. In the long jump, both Severson and
Madison Thompson – who also ran a season-best 12.92 in the 100-meter dash – set season-best marks of 5.25m and 5.20m, respectively. Both of them rank fourth and fifth all-time at MSUB in the event.
The women's sprinters ended the season on a high note in the 4x100 relay and the open 100-meter dash. MSUB's 4x100 team of
Katelyn Hamill, Thompson,
Sophia Bohl and
Chantel Chase placed second with a season-best time of 50.44.
In the open, Thompson led the way with her season-best 12.92 for fourth place, then Bohl and Hamill followed behind her, tying for fifth place with season-best 13.17s.
Whitney Herden rounded out the top 10 finishers in the 100-meter dash by placing ninth with a season-best 13.64. Like the women's race, the men's 100-meter dash also featured a tie for fifth place between
Bradley Graves and
Favor Okere, both of whom ran season-bests by crossing the line in 11.32 seconds.
Although most of the Yellowjackets at the DSU Last Chance Meet were sprinters and jumpers, distance runners
Jackson Bailey and
Kylee Halpin competed in the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters, respectively. Bailey ran a season-best and took sixth in his event, whereas Halpin placed fifth.
