MSUB's men's golf team jumped one spot to No. 7 on Sunday in the final round of the Bob Writz Invitational in Colorado.

‘Jacket men improve in final round of Writz Invitational

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Improving by five strokes in the final round of the Colorado School of Mines Bob Writz Invitational on Sunday at Bear Creek Golf Club, the Montana State University Billings men's golf team wrapped up the two-round tournament with a final round of 316.
 
The Yellowjackets jumped up one spot on the leaderboard to take seventh out of 10 teams, with a two-round total of 637 (321-316) on the par-72, 7,276-yard golf course. "The guys showed improvement today," said MSUB head coach Jeff Allen. "I felt that they played a little better than their scores showed, but again this is a tough golf course that will magnify your mistakes. We need to learn from today and keep working hard to improve each day."
 
Riley Kaercher was the top individual finisher for the Yellowjackets, as he tied for 28th place with a two-round total of 156 (76-80).
 
Payton Stott was the lone Yellowjacket to break the 80 mark in each round, as he finished the tournament with a 78 on Sunday. The junior wound up in a tie for 33rd place overall, with a two-round score of 157 (79-78).
 
Junior Garrett Woodin had the team's best score on Sunday, with a 5-over-par 77 his second time through the course. That boosted him nine spots up the leaderboard, as he finished tied for 36th with a total of 158 (81-77).
 
Logan Martin and Caleb Trost finished in a tie for 61st place, each with a score of 168 on the weekend. Martin carded an 81 on Sunday, while Trost finished with an 83.
 
Host Colorado School of Mines won the event, with a two-round total of 605 (300-305) to edge second-place Colorado Mesa University by five strokes. Individual medalist honors went to Victor Bjorlow of the University of Colorado, who was the only player in the field under par at a 1-under 143 (72-71).
 
THE BUZZ: Woodin was picked as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day.
 
NEXT UP: Coming up on the calendar for the 'Jackets is the three-round Western New Mexico University Mustang Invitational, on April 8-9 in Goodyear Arizona. It will be MSUB's final tournament before the 2019 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships April 22-23 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
