LAS VEGAS – Dominating the competition with three wins, 34 runs scored, and five surrendered, California State University San Bernardino claimed its first-ever Desert Stinger Classic tournament championship on Sunday afternoon at Majestic Park.
Â
In a fitting final gesture on Sunday afternoon centerfielder Morgan Ratliff, who was named tournament most valuable player, made the final out of the day with a perfect throw from centerfield to home plate to nail a runner trying to score from second. Ratliff, a senior from Santa Clara, California, batted .455 (5-for-11) with eight runs scored, a tournament-high six stolen bases, and a pair of outfield assists to lead the Coyotes.
Â
Also earning all-tournament honors from CSUSB was catcher Dominique Walker, who drove in eight runs while batting .750 (9-for-12) with four doubles and nine runs scored. The Coyotes beat Central Washington University 18-0 in five innings, topped Northwest Nazarene University 6-2, and finished off with a 10-3 win over the Academy of Art University.
