BURNABY, Canada. – The Montana State University Billings Men's Basketball team fell to the Simon Fraser University Clan, 88-76 in the 'Jackets first Great Northwest Athletic Conference game of the season.
The Yellowjackets (4-3, 0-1 GNAC) were playing their first league game while SFU (7-1, 2-0) was participating in their second league game having already defeated Western Washington University this past Tuesday.
The first half saw both teams trade points in a back and forth battle. MSUB's largest lead was six after a
Tyler Green three point shot with 9:08 left to make it 27-21 in the 'Jackets favor. Green converted four threes in the first half on the way to 14 points and in large part, kept MSUB alive in the first half.
SFU fought their way back and took a four point lead into halftime after a layup from Jasdeep Singh with four seconds remaining.
Coming out of the intermission, the Clan jumped all over the 'Jackets, streaking out to a nine point advantage just 1:20 into the second half.
MSUB would never retake the lead in the second half as they could just not make enough shots to keep pace. SFU would stretch their advantage to as much as 17 points with 4:20 left in the game and parlay that to the 88-76 victory.
"We got beat up by a big SFU team," said head coach
Mick Durham. "We felt good going into half time, but didn't have enough offense to stay with Simon in the second half. Our defense had a tough night on teh road."
Providing most of the offensive production early in the season, Green and
Brendan Howard were the only two 'Jackets to score double figures. Green finished with 22 points converting six threes, while the GNAC's leading scorer Howard finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double.
Chrishon Dixon had a game high and career high seven assists will adding six points and four rebounds.
Stevie James finished with nine points.
MSUB shot 50.8 percent from the field and 44.4 from behind the arc. SFU finished shooting 53.1 percent from the field and 55.5 percent from three point range.
SFU was led by Singh who finished with 21 points and Othniel spencer who finished with 20 points. Wilfried Balata contributed a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Player of the Game: Tyler Green was named St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game for his 22 points and six three point shots made.
WHAT'S AHEAD: The Yellowjackets take on GNAC foe WWU in Bellingham, Wash. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00pm MST.
