Recap: Yellowjackets fall flat against the Vikings

Box Score BELLINGHAM, Wash. – In a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game, The Montana State University Billings Men's Basketball team was routed by the Vikings of Western Washington University 86-62, Saturday night on the road.

The Yellowjackets (4-4, 0-2 GNAC) could not keep pace with an inspired WWU squad, falling behind 52-25 at the half. WWU led from the very start and in the wire-to-wire win, WWU played stout defense and concentrated on getting the ball down low to their big with 50 points in the paint.

Never able to recover, MSUB did play better in the second half but ultimately could not overcome such a large half time deficit.

"They set the tone from the get go," said head coach Mick Durham. "Their size really hurt us. I liked how we competed in the second half and think we can learn a lot from these first two GNAC games."

WWU out shot MSUB 56.7 percent to 36.8, had 17 assists to MSUB's eight and converted nine three point shots to MSUB's five.

The Yellowjackets did out rebound the Vikings 38-33 and shot 50.0 (5-10) from long range compared to WWU's 40.9 (9-22).

Brendan Howard would be the only 'Jacket to reach double figures with 19 points and added 13 rebounds for his fourth consecutive double-double and fifth out of eight games so far.

Chrishon Dixon and Stevie James both finished with nine points and seeing extended action, Ryan Perez finished with an MSUB career high six points.

Jalen Green from WWU led all players with 23 points and Luke Lovelady added 17.

Player of the Game: Brendan Howard was named St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game for his fourth consecutive double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds.

WHAT'S AHEAD: The Yellowjackets return to Billings for one last home game before the New Year as they take on rival Rocky Mountain College on Dec. 13. Tipoff is slated for 7:00pm at Alterowitz Gym.
