Offensive woes continue in 4-0 loss at SPU

SEATTLE – Three of the four goal scorers for host Seattle Pacific University were seniors on Senior Day for the Falcons, who topped visiting Montana State University Billings 4-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at Interbay Stadium.

Seattle Pacific scored twice in each half in a one-sided affair, and out-shot the Yellowjackets 25-6 on the afternoon. The Falcons improved to 10-4-1 overall and 6-3 in league play, while winning their third straight game and for the fourth time in their last five matches overall. SPU clinched the fourth and final spot into the GNAC Championships with the victory, upping its point total to 21 and moving seven points clear of fifth-place Central Washington.

The Yellowjackets meanwhile lost their fifth straight game and failed to score for the fourth straight contest. MSUB, which was eliminated from GNAC Championships contention after Thursday's 1-0 loss at the hands of Central Washington University, fell to 4-10-1 overall and 1-9 in league play with Saturday's defeat.

The Falcons commanded momentum from start to finish, and it was senior Makayla Sonstelie who struck first in the 17th minute of play. After combination play from Brooke Lancaster and Megan Nielsen, Sonstelie punched a seven-yard strike into the back of the net from a long cross from the left wing.

MSUB showed some fight after conceding the early goal, as freshman Cassidy O'Dell had her first two shots of the day blocked over the course of the next minute of play. O'Dell led the team with four attempts in the match.

SPU struck again midway through the first, when a late tackle inside the 18-yard box resulted in a penalty kick. Senior Kaytlin Willis stepped to the mark and buried a right-footed shot into the net from 12 yards away to make the score 2-0.

The 'Jackets managed two more shots in the opening half, including their lone on-target look of the day. After winning a corner kick in the 32nd minute, Amanda Hemmen tested SPU goalkeeper Abby Smith from within the goal box.

The game moved out of reach 10 minutes into the second half, when senior Mickayla Mury nodded home a header goal on an assist from Julia DeVere. Her third goal of the year was a well-placed finish into the upper-right corner of the net.

Freshman Abbie Anderson contributed her first career goal in the 76th minute, making the most on a cross by Makena Rietz. Anderson connected for an eight-yard finish into the left side of the net, giving the Falcons a 4-0 advantage.

MSUB managed just one shot the rest of the day, as O'Dell fired a powerful attempt high over the crossbar with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Senior goalkeeper Lili Delgadillo made seven saves in the match for the 'Jackets, and center back Kalin Sandow played the full 90 minutes for the sixth straight game.

THE BUZZ: O'Dell was named the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…MSUB is now 4-21-2 all-time and 1-11-2 in road games against SPU...SPU won the season series after a 2-1 win over MSUB in Billings on October 6.

AHEAD: The 2018 season concludes at home next week, as the Yellowjackets host Simon Fraser University and No. 18 Western Washington University. Kickoff against the Clan is set for 1 p.m. on October 25, and the game against the Vikings is at 1 p.m. on October 27.
