Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 18 Vikings push past MSUB women 2-0

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – For the second straight meeting between the Western Washington University and Montana State University Billings women's soccer teams, Peyton Chick and Talia Daigle proved to be the winning combination as the No. 18 Vikings topped the Yellowjackets 2-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Thursday night at Harrington Field.

Daigle's game-winner came in the ninth minute of action, when she finished a cross by Chick from the left corner with a one-time effort into the far part of the net. The same two players connected in WWU's 1-0 win over MSUB the last time the teams met, just over a year ago at Yellowjacket Field on September 30, 2017 when the Vikings were ranked No. 1 in the NCAA.

Though the score read just 2-0, the match was one-sided from the beginning as WWU out-shot MSUB 33-2 overall. The Yellowjackets endured the constant barrage of shots by the Vikings, with sophomore goalkeeper Erinn Harder making a season-high eight saves to keep her team in it until the end.

The 'Jackets dropped their third straight match, falling to 4-7-1 overall and 1-6 in conference play. WWU meanwhile pushed its unbeaten streak to six games and moved to 10-2-1 and 5-1-1 in league play. The shutout was the seventh of the year for WWU and its fifth in the last six matches.

"Our players gave everything to the game," said MSUB head coach Stephen Cavallo. "I am proud of them. The result doesn't go our way, but this is probably one of the toughest places in the nation to play. The girls did everything they could today."

MSUB's first shot of the match proved to be its best chance to score, as Julia Keller nearly evened the score nine minutes into the second half. WWU goalkeeper Natalie Dierickx charged off her line as Keller ran onto awsocpotg1011 long ball over the top, and was able to deny the freshman's shot from within the goal box. Diericx had one other save in earning her fourth shutout of the year, as she helped WWU lower its NCAA-18th best goals-against average of 0.48 entering the day.

Zoe Milburn added a final goal for good measure in the 88th minute, tucking a neat shot high and inside the far post to finish off the scoring. Milburn became the 12th different Viking to cut loose a shot in the match, as her team came within two of its season high of 35 shots in the game. Darby Doyle had her second assist of the season on the play.

Harder saved her best denial of the night for last, when she dove backwards to push away an attempt by Gabriela Pelogi with one minute left on the clock. Pelogi led all players with eight attempts in the match, including four on target.

The Vikings won three corner kicks in the opening five minutes of play, as they came out firing from the opening whistle.
Pelogi had a near miss 18 minutes in, cutting back to beat her defender inside the box and blasting a left-footed attempt wide of the near post. Harder's first save of the match followed on another attempt by Pelogi, as she came off her line to smother a shot from near the six-yard box.

The Viking striker had an apparent goal disallowed with 16 minutes left in the first half, after her neat touch into the back of the net was waved off in place of an offside call.

Caylie Etherington came inches away from doubling WWU's lead with two minutes to go before halftime, but her long, right-footed shot from the right side curled just high over the crossbar.

MSUB earned a free kick 30 yards from goal midway through the second, creating their second legitimate opportunity of the match. Claire Tevaseu cut loose a shot, but Dierickx was able to handle it to keep MSUB off the scoreboard.

With 14 minutes remaining, Liv Larson drilled a shot towards the far post from the top of the box and the 'Jackets held their breath as they watched it skim past the frame of the goal. The near-goal came two minutes after an on-target header by Pelogi inside the box, but Harder read the play well and was there to secure the save.

Perhaps Pelogi's closest attempt of the game came with five minutes left, when she created space in the box on the right side and punched a low shot that rattled the left goal post. Kalin Sandow stepped forward to block the ensuing shot attempt, as the 'Jacket defense held tough through the final whistle. Sandow and fellow center backs Amanda Hemmen and Courteney Shovlin each played a full 90 minutes in the match.

"This is another result we can build off of, and one that shows we are moving in the right direction," Cavallo said.

THE BUZZ: Sandow was named the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…MSUB is now 3-21-2 all-time against WWU and is 1-9-2 in road matchups…the save total was the fourth-highest of Harder's career…her personal best was 12 saves in the last match against the Vikings a season ago…WWU has won 12 matches in-a-row dating back to the 2011 season…MSUB's two shots in the match were its fewest of the season…WWU has held its opponents to two shots or less in a match 13 times over the last 10 seasons…Thursday marked MSUB's second match of the year against a top-25 team, as they fell 4-0 at No. 10 Concordia University on September 22.

NEXT UP: The 'Jackets return to the pitch Saturday to take on Simon Fraser University in more GNAC play. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Pacific/2 p.m. Mountain time from Terry Fox Field in Burnaby, British Columbia, and live video and live statistics will be available online through the MSUB Stretch Internet portal here.
