Men's Cross Country

Preview: 2016 NCAA Division II West Region Cross Country Championships

BILLINGS, Mont. – For the second time in three years, the NCAA Division II west region cross country championships are returning to the Magic City. Montana State University Billings is welcoming 55 men's and women's teams from across the western United States with more than 450 student-athletes entered to compete in the championship event on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Amend Park was the site of the 2014 championships, and the complex in south Billings will again be the chosen destination for 30 NCAA Division II institutions set to compete for a place in the national race being held on Nov. 19, in Saint Leo, Fla.

The top five men's teams and top six women's teams earn a berth to the national meet as well as the top three placing individuals from each gender not affiliated with a qualifying team. The three conferences that comprise the west region, California Collegiate Athletic Association, Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and the PacWest will all send representatives to the west region event.

In 2014, MSUB men's cross country runner Robert Peterson became the first Yellowjacket athlete to advance to the national meet. Peterson earned a spot by finishing as the top individual in the men's race not on an advancing team.

At the GNAC championships two weeks ago, the MSUB men's team placed fifth overall while the women finished 11th. For the men's team, Garrett Love (16th) and Jorey Egeland (18th) were just steps apart at the finish line. Nikki Aiken (64th) and Rio Frame (69th) led the MSUB women's effort on the conference course at Lake Padden Park in Bellingham, Wash.

Two years ago at the 2014 west region championships at Amend Park, the MSUB men's team placed 17th of 23 teams. The women's team was 13th of 24.
