Box Score 2 BILLINGS, Mont. - The Montana State University Billings Baseball team lost games three and four of a four game series to Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponent Central Washington University.
MSUB lost game three 6-20 and then fell late in game four 3-7 after CWU scored four runs in the top of the seventh and final inning.
GAME 3: MSUB 6 CWU 20 The Wildcats outhit MSUB 25-13 and scored runs in all but two innings including a nine run second inning.
CWU opened up the scoring with the nine run inning, but MSUB answered back putting up five of their own runs.
Luke Reinschmidt got things started off with a double to center field.
Drew Fosnes then stepped to the plate and blasted a triple to left center field scoring Reinschmidt.
Conner Holbrook then drove in Fosnes with a single up the middle to provide two quick runs for MSUB.
Two batters later,
Bret Bitow doubled to right field which allowed Holbrook to cross home plate. Two batters after him,
Kevin Toon hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing
Casey Merritt to score from third.
The fifth run of the inning came on an error committed by the CWU third baseman during
Brad Birch's at bat that allowed Bitow to score from third and cut the CWU lead to 9-5.
From there, the Wildcats slowly and steadily pushed runs across home plate from the fourth to the ninth inning and MSUB did not. The final MSUB run came after Toon doubled to left field followed by a Birch double to center pushing Toon across home plate.
GAME 4: MSUB 3 CWU 7 In a lower scoring affair, MSUB and CWU battled back and forth with MSUB grabbing the lead early, CWU taking back, MSUB once again claiming the lead, CWU tying the game up late then scoring four runs in the final inning to take the win.
MSUB got things started off scoring one run in the first inning off of a
Trevor Nix double that scored Toon from third base and MSUB seized the early 1-0 lead.
CWU would overtake MSUB in the third inning scoring two runs and the 2-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Fosnes hit a double to center field allowing Reinschmidt to cross home plate from second base. Four batters later,
Brody Miller grounded out to the second baseman but gave Fosnes enough time to score from third base and retake the lead 3-2.
The Wildcats tied the ball game up in the top of the sixth inning scoring one run. Then CWU opened up the largest lead of the game in the top of the seventh inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. Two singles, one MSUB error, one sacrifice fly out, and CWU had taken a 7-3 lead. The Yellowjackets could not mount a comeback as they went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning allowing CWU to escape with the 7-3 win and take the series overall 3-1.
Starting pitcher,
Joe Andriolo had the best putting for any MSUB pitcher on the day as he went 5.2 innings, allowed three runs and nine hits while striking out two batters.
With the losses, MSUB drops to 12-28 overall and 9-17 in the GNAC.
The Yellowjackets next play five and a half games at home against Northwest Nazarene University beginning on Thursday, May 1st. The first game and a half will be a continuation and a makeup game as MSUB and NNU were rained out in Idaho earlier in the year.
