Yellowjackets Lose Series to SMU 1-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BILLINGS, Mont. - The Montana State University Billings Baseball team lost their final two games against Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe, Saint Martin's University to lose the overall series 1-3.

MSUB could just not seem to light a fire as they fell 21-7 in game three and 6-8 in game four as SMU out hit MSUB 34-24 in the two games combined.

GAME 3: MSUB 7 SMU 21

The Saints came out on fire, scoring at least two runs in every inning but the second and the ninth to give them a 21-4 lead going into the ninth inning.

Bret Bitow was a true utility player today as he started in left field, the moved to third base and finally pitched the last inning for MSUB.  He had 3 hits, two of which were home runs to give him three total on the year, on four at bats along with three RBIs.  From the mound, Bitow went 1.0 innings, allowed no runs and no hits while striking out one batter.

Brody Miller finished the game one for four, but the one hit was a solo home run to give him four on the season.  Luke Reinschmidt finished game three with three hits on five at bats and one RBI.  Kevin Toon went two for three while Conner Holbrook and Tanner Watson each recorded a hit.

GAME 4: MSUB 6 SMU 8

The Yellowjackets would need a late rally to make things interesting as they were down 0-7 early after SMU scored seven runs in the second inning after Chandler Tracey hit his third home run of the day which happened to be a grand slam.

But MSUB would fight their way back into the game.  Bitow continued his hitting spree as he went 3-5 in game four (6-9 on the day combined).  Bitow began the third inning with a single to left field then proceeded to steal second.  Two batters late, Bitow had advanced to third then was pushed across home plate on a Toon sacrifice fly.

The Yellowjackets would add two more runs in the fourth inning after Drew Fosnes lead the inning off with a single to center field then stole second base.  Casey Merritt stepped to the plate a hit a double to left center field that scored Fosnes from second.  Two batters later, Miller hit his 13th double of the season to left center field allowing Merritt to score from second base and cut the SMU lead to 7-3.

The Saints added one more run in the fifth inning to extend their advantage 8-3.  MSUB would match the run with one of their own in the bottom of the inning.  Brad Birch grounded out to second base, but in the process gave Holbrook enough time to cross home plate from third base and chip away at the SMU lead 4-8.

The Yellowjackets scored another two runs in the sixth inning.  Bitow again began with a leadoff single then stole second base for a second time.  He was able to advance to third base on an error by the short stop on the pickoff attempt.

Miller was up next and blasted his second home run of the game (fifth of the season) to tack on two RBIs and bring MSUB within striking distance 6-8.

The Yellowjackets put the pressure on SMU as Fosnes doubled in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out.  The next batter, Merritt, was walked and the tying run was on base with just one out.  That would be as close as MSUB would get as the next two batters pooped up to give SMU the 8-6 win and the 3-1 series victory.

Joe Andriolo started from the mound and went 6.0 innings allowing nine hits and eight runs to go with one strike out.

The loss drops MSUB to 11-25 overall and 8-14 in GNAC play.

The Yellowjackets next welcome Central Washington University to Dehler Park on April 25th and 26th.
