MSUB Softball Drops two Makeup Games at SMU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LACEY, Wash.  – The Montana State University Billings Softball team lost both of their games against Saint Martin's University on Friday, Apr. 18 by scores of 1-19 and 3-4.

After the two teams' series was halted on April 30 due to weather, game one resumed with Montana State University Billings (15-20, 7-13 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) down 1-15 in the top of the fourth inning.  Saint Martin's University (23-17, 12-6 GNAC) added four more runs in the remaining two innings, while MSUB was unable to add any to their total.

Cori Gammon was 1-2 in the first game and scored the Yellowjackets lone run in the third inning.  All three MSU Billings' hits came in the third inning as Gammon, Aubrey Conceicao, and Emily Osborn all had singles.

SMU scored 19 runs on 18 hits.  Every starting player in the Saints lineup had a hit.  Sam Munger picked up the win.  She pitched three innings while giving up one run on three hits.

Amanda Roark (0-4) picked up the loss for MSU Billings.

The second game was a much closer contest.  Both teams had six hits in the game.
Saint Martin's jumped out to the lead scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, but MSUB would counter with one run at the bottom of the inning.  SMU would add one more in the fourth and fifth innings, as MSUB would add one each in the fifth and the sixth inning to get the score to within one run, 3-4 heading into the seventh.

Amanda Todd would hold the Saints off at the top of the seventh, but MSU Billings would be unable to come up with any more runs in the bottom of the inning and SMU would go on to win the game by one run.

Conceicao would finish the game 3-3 with one run, one RBI, and a double.  She would end the game with 3-6 of the Yellowjackets' hits.  Katie Schermele was 1-3 and hit her second homerun of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Amanda Todd (4-7) picked up the loss, pitching the complete game for MSUB, fanning six hits while giving up four runs and striking out four batters.

Sam Munger (17-12) earned her second win of the day.  She came into the game in relief of Kaylee Lawson for the victory.

"Today we finished our game from back in Billings," Head Coach Lisa Allen said. "We had dug ourselves too big of a hole from the get go. We talked about letting that game go and moving onto the next game. The girls played well in the second game. We didn't make a quick enough adjustment on their pitcher though. Amanda Todd and our defense played well today. We were just one clutch hit away from tying or winning the game. Now our team is headed to Simon Fraser to finish out the GNAC conference."

Tomorrow, Montana State University Billings will play Simon Fraser in the first two-games of their four game series.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 pm Pacific Time.  Live stats can be found at MSUBSports.com.

Notes:  With the two wins today, Saint Martin's secures a spot in the GNAC Championships postseason tournament.  The 1-19 loss is the worst loss in MSUB softball history.  The previous record was a 3-20 loss against Mesa State on Mar. 31, the first year in the program's history in 2001.
