Box Score 2 BILLINGS, Mont. - The Montana State University Billings Baseball team earned a split in games one and two agaisnt Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponent, Saint Martin's University.
In a day that featured extra innings, MSUB won game one 8-7 in 11 innings and then lost game two 4-3 in nine innings (the second game is a seven inning game).
GAME 1: MSUB 8 SMU 7 Both teams finished with 15 hits, but SMU committed five errors with the last one being the most costly.
Blake Loran belted a deep fly ball to left field that allowed
Brody Miller to tag from second base and reach third. The cutoff man for SMU bobbled the ball and committed the error that allowed Miller to take off towards home and slide across home plate to give MSUB the 8-7 win.
Miller, who went 4-6 from the plate, and Loran both finished with two RBIs while
Brad Birch,
Drew Fosnes and
Luke Reinschmidt each had one.
Brady Muller put in 7.1 innings of work as the starting pitcher allowing 10 hits and six runs while striking out four batter.
Jake Campeau closed out the game, and was credited with the win, pitched 3.0 innings allowing just three hits, one run while striking out Saints.
GAME 2: MSUB 3 SMU 4 SMU struck first scoring one run in the first inning and one run in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. MSUB cut that in half when
Kevin Toon hit a hard ball up the middle that allowed
Bret Bitow to score from third base.
The Yellowjackets tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning when Bitow hit a single up the middle that allowed
Casey Merritt to score all the way from second base.
In the eighth inning, SMU was able to score two runs to take a 4-2 lead. MSUB had one last chance to rally and pull of the win. MSUB cut it to 3-4 on a Toon single to left field that gave Reinschmidt time to score from third base and give MSUB the tying run on base with two outs. The rally was stopped as the next Yellowjacket batter grounded out to third base and give SMU the 4-3 win.
Matt Eames started game two going 4.2 innings allowing four hits, two runs and struck out two Saints.
Jordan Knoll came in relief going 2.1 innings allowing seven hits, two runs while striking out two batters.
"Our guys fought hard all day," head coach
Rob Bishop said." "I was happy with our effort in both games but we definitely left a lot of men in scoring position all day. SMU's pitching was tough today and made us work for every run that we scored. Tomorrow is a huge day for us in the GNAC. We will show up ready to compete."
After game one and two of the series, MSUB moves to 11-23 overall and 8-12 in the GNAC. SMU moves to 11-26, 7-15. Game three is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM tomorrow April 19th followed by game four. Live stats and video (weather allowing for video) will be available at MSUBSPORTS.COM.
