MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Montana State University Billings Softball team lost games three and four against Western Oregon on Saturday, Mar. 8 by scores of 2-8 and 1-8.
MSU Billings (5-8, 0-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) ended their first conference double-headers at Western Oregon with a pair of losses to open their conference season with a tough road trip.
"Today we struggled getting the clutch hit," Head Coach
Lisa Allen said. "We had several runners left on base in both games and just couldn't push them across the plate."
In game one, after two scoreless innings, MSUB would strike first.
Taylor Hoke hit a single down the right field line to bring in
Aubrey Conceicao and
Cori Gammon to put the Yellowjackets up 2-0.
Western Oregon University (11-10, 4-0 GNAC) would respond in the bottom of the third inning, adding six runs on three hits. Amanda Evola brought in the first two runs when she hit a single into right field for the Wolves. Bridjet Box then added a third run when she hit a sac fly to left field to bring in Kelsie Gardner. WOU's Dani Harcourt added three more runs when she hit a triple into left to put Western Oregon up at the end of the third inning 6-2.
Western Oregon's Evola was able to add to more runs when she hit a two-run home run to center in the bottom of the fourth.
Montana State University Billings and Western Oregon University both finished the game with seven hits.
MSUB's Conceicao and Hoke were both 2-3 in hits for the game. For the Wolves, Evola finished the game going 2-4 with 4 RBI's. Harcourt had one hit on three at bats with 3 RBI's.
Pitching six innings for MSUB was
Mary Grace Bywater who took her first loss of the season (3-1). She gave up two earned runs on seven WOU's hits.
MSUB committed three errors while WOU had two. The Yellowjackets also left six runners on base to the Wolves four. Pitching a complete game, Kelli Demianew (2-5) recorded the win for Western Oregon.
In the second game, MSUB was never able to get their bats going. The team finished with five hits and left seven runners on base, while recording only one run.
Western Oregon had two runs score in the second, fourth and fifth innings and one run in the third and sixth. Five Wolves each had two hits in the game, while three recorded two RBI's.
Montana State University Billings' one run in the game in the came in the fifth inning when
Cori Gammon singled to second base, bringing in
Katie Schermele. Unfortunately, for the Yellowjackets they also stranded three runners on base in the third, as they weren't able to bring in any more runners.
"Our defense and pitchers did a good job of playing in the rain," Coach Allen said. "Offensively we need to have better approaches at the plate and hit our pitches."
For MSUB
Jessica Campbell got the start on the mound for the Yellowjackets. She went 4 2/3 innings allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs.
Jessyka MacDonald came in to pitch 1.1 innings allowing one hit and one earned run. Campbell recorded the loss and is now 0-1 on the season.
The Wolves' Cadwallader went 4 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and one earned run. She recorded the win for WOU and is now 1-2 on the season.
