ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Montana State University Billings Baseball team earned a split against Central Washington University on day one. MSUB won game one 8-2, then reversed scores and lost game two 2-8.
GAME 1: MSUB 8 CWU 2
The Yellowjackets were led offensively by
Brody Miller who finished game one with three hits on four at bats and totaled three RBI's after he hit a three run homerun in the eighth inning. The bomb over left center field is his third of the season.
Starting pitcher
Matt Eames lead the way defensively pitching 6.0 innings allowing only five hits and two runs while striking out six Wildcats.
Jake Mills came in relief for the last three innings allowing just two hits, no runs and had two strikeouts.
The game scoreless through the first two innings until MSUB struck for two runs in the top of the third inning. Reigning GNAC player of the week,
Kevin Toon singled through the left side scoring
Bret Bitow and
Steven DeYoung.
CWU also got on the board in the third inning scoring one run to make it a 2-1 game in favor of MSUB going into the fourth.
The Wildcats tied the game up in the fifth inning only to see MSUB tack on one more run in the sixth inning on a fielding error that allowed
Blake Loran to score from third base.
MSU-Billings put the game away in the eighth inning on Miller's homerun to extend their lead 7-2. Just for good measure, MSUB added one more run in the ninth inning when
Luke Reinschmidt singled through short stop which allowed
Myles Berkram to score from third.
GAME 2: MSUB 2 CWU 8
The Yellowjackets could not seem to capture the same offensive power they harnessed in the first game as the team finished with six hits, but could only muster two runs. Miller however continued his red hot season as he was responsible for both MSUB runs.
Miller's first RBI happened in the third inning as he belted a ball through the left side that scored Bitow. The final run came in the fifth inning when Miller grounded out to the short stop but still allowed Reinschmidt to score from third base.
The Wildcat starting pitcher, Brandon Williams, shut down MSUB only allowing two runs on six hits while striking out 10 Yellowjackets.
Bryon Baker received the start for MSUB in game two and went 2.1 innings allowing five hits and four runs while striking out one CWU batter.
Joe Andriolo came in relief and also put in 2.1 innings of work striking out two Wildcats and allowing just one run on two hits.
"Today was the tail of two opposite games for us," head coach
Rob Bishop said. "We made pitches, made plays and got clutch hitting in game one. In the second game we simply didn't play well defensively or get a big hit when we needed it. CWU's pitcher, Williams was good all day and kept the pressure on us. We will need to regroup tomorrow and come out ready to compete."
The Yellowjackets and the Wildcats continue their four game series with games three and four tomorrow starting at 12:00 PM PT.
