Women's Basketball Lose Battle at West Region, Finish Season at Sweet Sixteen

POMONA, Calif. - The Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball team lost their NCAA Div. II West Region Championship game to Cal Poly Pomona on Monday, Mar. 17, 68-75.

It was a close contest, which featured seven lead changes with Montana State University Billings (25-8) up by as many as nine, but Cal Poly (25-6) found a way to win the battle in Kellogg Gymnasium.
 
Cal Poly dominated the opening minutes of the game, with MVP of the tournament Jada Blackwell hitting a three at the 10:31 mark to give CPP their largest lead of the game at 25-15.
 
MSU Billings would storm back with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 15, with back to back threes from Kayleen Goggins and Quinn Peoples and two lay-ups by Alisha Breen.  In the last four minutes of the first half, the Yellowjackets would go on a 12-6 run to take the lead 40-34 into the break.
 
In the first half MSUB shot 57.7 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from the three-point arc.  Goggins led MSUB with 10 points and three rebounds.
 
The Yellowjackets were able to contain Blackwell to 8 points in the first half.  Ashley Lovett had six rebounds.
 
Bobbi Knudsen would open the second half of the game with a three-pointer to put MSUB up by nine, 43-34, but CPP would respond with a 10-3 run to get the Broncos to within two, 44-46.  Cal Poly Pomona would keep up the pressure, trading baskets with MSU Billings until CPP made a lay-up with 11:52 left in the game to take the lead for the first time since the opening half.
 
Blackwell's lay-up was the start of a 7-0 run to put CPP up by eight, 57-49, with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
 
Austin Hanser and Knudsen would get the game back to within three for MSUB with two free throws each, at the 1:06 mark, 68-71.
 
MSUB's Goggins would have a chance to tie the game with 35 seconds left, but her shot would bounce off the rim and CPP's Lovett would grab the rebound.  With time dwindling, MSUB would be forced to foul.  Ariel Marsh would make four free-throws in a row to ice the game for the Broncos.
 
Both teams dropped their shooting average in the second half, but MSUB would dip down to 25 percent, making 8-32 shots.  The Yellowjackets finished the game 23-58 for a 39.7 percent game average.  Cal Poly Pomona would end up out rebounding MSUB 36-30 and having more points in the paint 26-20. 
 
Knudsen finished the game with 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists, with a total 52 points in the tournament on her way to being named First Team All-Region.
 
Goggins was also First Team and had 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists.  She had 41 points over the three games.
 
Chelsea Banis was 5-11 in the game for 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.  Alisha Breen also finished in double-digits with 10 points and five rebounds.  Banis ended the tournament with 38 points while Breen had 32 rebounds.
 
CPP's Blackwell was the game's high scorer with 20 points and eight rebounds.  Ariel Marsh finished with 19 points, including going 8-8 from the free-throw line.  Lovett ended the game with a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. 
 
The Broncos shot 22-27 from the free-throw line while MSUB was 11-14.
 
MSU Billings will finish the season one game shy of the Elite Eight since 1999.
