LACEY Wash. – The Montana State University Billings Baseball dropped their first two games of a four games series to Saint Martin's University on Friday. MSUB lost 12-4 in game one and 3-2 in game two.
GAME 1: MSUB 4 SMU 12
The Saints would strike first when they scored one run in the first inning. MSUB answered back with a run of their own in the third inning off of a
Brad Birch (2-4) triple. The triple was able to score
Kevin Toon (3-3) who hit a double on his at bat right before Birch to even the score at 1-1 going into the bottom of the third inning.
The bottom of the third inning proved to be MSUB's undoing. SMU racked up six total runs on four hits and take a 7-1 lead.
The Yellowjackets tacked on another run in the fourth inning after
Luke Reinschmidt (2-4) hit a double that was able to push
Drew Fosnes (1-4) across home plate and chip away the SMU lead to 7-2.
SMU would bounce right back and add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and one more in the fifth inning to push their advantage to 10-2.
MSU-Billings scored their final two runs in the seventh inning. The first came on a
Bret Bitow (1-5) to center field that allowed Reinschmidt to score from third base. The final run came two batters later when Toon was able to single up the middle and score Bitow from second base.
The Saints added two more runs in the seventh as well and sealed the 12-4 victory.
Matt Eames received the start from the mound in game one. He went 3.0 innings allowing six hits and nine runs while striking out three Saints.
Joe Andriolo came in relief and went 3.0 innings as well allowing three hits, one run and struck out two batters.
GAME 2: MSUB 2 SMU 3
SMU was able to pull out the win in extra innings. Game two is a seven inning game and SMU won in nine innings.
The Saints again scored in the first inning, but MSUB responded with a run of their own in the third inning.
Casey Merritt scored the run after hitting a double which then allowed
Brody Miller to hit a single to right field and score Merritt from second base and tie the score 1-1.
The Saints added another run in the fifth inning to take the lead 2-1. The Yellowjackets answered right back in the sixth inning scoring another run when Toon was able to reach third on passed ball, then score from third on an error and even the game at 2-2.
SMU was able to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a walk off single from Spencer Dodd that was able to score the runner on third base and end the game giving SMU the 3-2 win.
Bryon Baker started game two from the mound for the Yellowjackets. He put in 5.0 innings of work allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out four Saints.
Brady Muller finished the game for MSUB going 3.1 innings, striking out two batters and allowing one run with two hits.
"A disappointing overall effort by our guys in game one today," head coach
Rob Bishop said. "We didn't compete to our potential in any aspect of the game. Game two was a different story. Both teams pitched very well in game 2 and it was a battle. Unfortunately we came out on the short end. Tomorrow's games are huge for us."
MSUB falls to 2-16 overall and 1-5 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. MSUB will take on SMU in games three and four tomorrow, Mar. 15th with a 12:00 PM PT start time. For stats visit http://www.smusaints.com/index.aspx
