W. Basketball Falls Short Against Saints

Box Score

LACEY, Wash.  – The #25 Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball Team fell to Saint Martin's University on Saturday, Feb. 22, 59-69.

With the loss to the Saints, MSU Billings falls to 21-6 and 13-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

In the first half of the game, Saint Martin's (15-10, 9-7 GNAC) was 10-31 from the field for a 32 percent shooting percentage, while MSUB was 10-34 and 29 percent. The difference was in the three-point shooting; SMU shot 4-10 and was 40 percent while MSU Billings was 1-10 from behind the arc for a 10 percent average.

Saint Martin's was in the lead for most of the first half until with 2:16 left on the clock, MSUB's Kayleen Goggins drove into the basket for a lay-up to take the lead 25-24.  SMU's Jordyn Richardson would respond with a three-point basket to take back the lead and take the Saints into the locker room with a two-point advantage, 27-25.

"I give SMU a lot of credit – they really played hard tonight," Head Coach Kevin Woodin said.  "I was impressed with the effort they put forth.  We struggled at times to make enough shots.  I thought we got some good looks, we just didn't shoot the ball very well tonight, and I think you have to give credit to their defense as well."

At the start of the second half, MSUB would regain the lead with a free-throw and a jump-shot by Chelsea Banis.  From there it would be back and forth until in the middle of the second half when MSUB would get their largest lead of the game off a three-point shot from Kayleen Goggins to go up 45-39.

With 5:47 left in the game, SMU would tie the game at 52-52 on a free-throw by Brooke Paulson.  That would be the start of a run 17-7 run by the Saints to end the game.

"I felt at half-time we were fortunate to only be down by two," Coach Woodin stated. "Then, in the second half we were able to come back and retake the lead, but we just could not sustain that.  Down the stretch I thought they did a nice job of closing out the game."

For Saint Martin's, Chelsea Haksey finished the game with 17 points.  Megan Wiederman had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.  Jori Skorpik had seven assists for the Saints.

Bobbi Knudsen finished the game for MSUB with 19 points and five assists.  Chelsea Banis had her second double-double of the season.  She ended the game with 11 points and a new career-high 14 rebounds.

In her first start of the season, Alisha Breen had 11 points and nine rebounds.  The 11 rebounds is also a new career-high for her.

"It will be great to finish the season at home," Coach Woodin said.  "We are looking forward hosting both UAF and UAA next week."
