BILLINGS, Mont. – Last week the Yellowjackets opened up Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a loss against nationally-ranked Alaska Anchorage, but came back on Saturday with a solid win over Alaska Fairbanks.
Kayleen Goggins put up 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the two games. Sophomore forward
Alisha Breen contributed 29 points and 13 rebounds shooting 62.5 percent against the Seawolves on Thursday.
"I was pleased we were able to bounce back from our Anchorage loss with a win against Fairbanks," head coach
Kevin Woodin said. "Anchorage has an excellent team and will be very hard to beat this year. For the most part, we played well against Fairbanks but we still have a lot of room for improvement."
Goggins is leading the Yellowjackets averaging 18.2 points per game. Breen is adding 15.7 points and a team-leading 7.7 rebounds off the glass.
Quinn Peoples is averaging 12.8 points per game with 2.3 3-point baskets made per game.
As a team, Montana State University Billings (6-3, 1-1 GNAC) is shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the 3-point arc. The Yellowjackets are averaging 45.2 rebounds per game, a 9.4 advantage over their opponents.
This week is finals week at MSUB and the women's basketball team is concentrating their efforts on the books.
"This week will be a challenge, both physically and mentally," Coach Woodin said. "Final exams change practice times, regular sleep patterns, and create added stress. However, I feel we have a team that can respond with a positive effort on the floor on Saturday night. We have a lot of veterans who know how to do the right thing and they will help our younger players stay focused this week."
Up first for MSU Billings is nationally-ranked NAIA Jamestown (N.D.) The Jimmies were ranked No. 10 in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top-25 poll after pulling to an 8-3 record with a big 96-48 win over Trinity Bible College on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
"Jamestown is a very good opponent," Woodin commented on the team with six national tournament appearances in the last 30 years. "They won 27 games last year and have a strong team again this year."

"It will be nice to host our own tournament before departing for the winter break," Coach Woodin said. "I am excited about the teams that are coming in and very grateful to our two major sponsors – Billings Hotel & Convention Center and ExxonMobil. Without their generosity, the tournament would not be possible. We are playing four games in one week so it is important that we get good bench play. We will need to play good team basketball and two areas I want to see improvement in are limiting turnovers and controlling the defensive boards."
