BILLINGS, Mont. – Kortney McNeil, Anna DeMars and Shealyn Hafer have each signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf for Montana State University Billings announced Yellowjacket head coach
Shawn O'Brien Thursday.
Â
"This recruiting class is one of the best our women's golf program has ever brought in," O'Brien said. "We are going to be a small team in depth next season, but the talent level is great. I am excited for these young ladies to join our program and meet our current underclassmen. The combination of these freshmen and our underclassmen is going to have an opportunity to create something very special next year."
Â
McNeil, a Billings native, is a senior at Billings Senior High School where she has been a two-sport, four-year athlete. In addition to golf, McNeil is a point guard on the girls' basketball team for head coach Drew Haws. McNeil is a two-time Class AA individual state champion, and she led the Broncs to the 2012 team state title.
Â
On the course, McNeil's personal bests include a low-round of 68 as she became the first girl from Montana to make the cut at the Trusted Choice Big I National Championship where she placed 31st. Carrying a perfect 4.00 grade point average, McNeil will graduate in the spring at the top of her class. She is a four-time academic all-state selection.
Â
"Kortney is an unbelievable person, student, and golfer," O'Brien said. "She has had tremendous success over the past few years, and she is going to have an opportunity to dominate our conference and region if she plays to her potential. I am very happy Kortney chose our golf program and university."
Â
A three-sport standout at Butte High School, Hafer excelled in golf, basketball, and softball for the Bulldogs. She was a four-time all-state golfer, and helped her team to three second-place finishes. Hafer was also a three-time academic all-state pick, and was the team captain during her 2014 season.
Â
Winning the Best Golfer award at BHS, she placed third individually at the state tournament in 2014. She set a record at Deer Lodge Golf Course, and was a member of the Girls Junior America's Cup Team and the Montana Alberta Cup Team.
Â
"Shea has a vast amount of talent on the golf course," O'Brien said. "She is going to fit in very well with our team, and have a lot of success next year. Shea is going to help our team and university by providing a lot of experience and stability."
Â
Also a three-sport athlete in high school, DeMars has won nine letters in golf, volleyball and basketball at Broadwater High School in Townsend, Mont. With her senior season yet to come, DeMars is a three-time all-state pick in golf and has been named academic all-state in all three sports.
Â
Her best single round in golf is a 76, and she was the Wheat Montana Junior Golf Tour champion. Under head coach Pete Robischon, DeMars helped the Bulldogs to back-to-back team state championships.
Â
"I am really excited to join such an amazing golf program," DeMars said. "I look forward to my next four years as a Yellowjacket."
Â
"Anna is one of the nicest young ladies I have had the opportunity to meet," said O'Brien. "Anna is going to bring great morale and chemistry to our team, as she follows in the footsteps of former high school teammate
Bailee Dexter. Anna is going to have a great high school golf season this spring, and I am very pleased we have signed her to play next fall."
