Box Score BURNABY, B.C. –
Alisa Sagdahl scored twice to highlight a four-goal performance by the Montana State University Billings women's soccer team in a 4-0 win over Simon Fraser on Saturday evening at Terry Fox Field.
Sagdahl scored once in each half to bring her team-leading season goals total to five, and senior
Chelsea Shuman also scored for MSUB. The Yellowjackets' fourth goal came on a cross by
Ashely Marra that was misplayed by the SFU defense and resulted in an own goal. "The goals that we scored were quality," said MSUB head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak. "We are happy with the win, as it was a good offensive performance by our team."
Anchored by the same core four that has played every minute this season, the Yellowjackets' defense was once again stellar as it allowed just two shots and one on frame all game. Seniors
Jennifer Johnson and
Jessie Mancilla, and sophomores
Haley McFarlane and
Kari Kastelic helped shutdown the Clan, and goalkeeper
Krystal Daniels made one save and picked up her fifth shutout of the season. "We did well defensively and we were organized and got the shutout," said Krakowiak.
MSUB totaled 14 shots on the match and won four corner kicks without allowing any. The Yellowjackets improved to 7-3-2 on the season, and remained in good standing in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 5-3-2 in league play.
Simon Fraser (2-12, 2-8 GNAC), did not manage a shot in the second half of the match. Goalkeeper Priya Sandhu made a pair of saves for the Clan while facing six shots on target.
Daniels got her hands on the ball 20 minutes in, as she saved a shot by SFU's Olivia Aguiar that was on frame.
Sagdahl took her first shot of the match in the 21st minute, but missed high. Her next strike was on target however, as she put the 'Jackets ahead with her team-high fifth goal of the season in the 23rd minute.
The Yellowjackets kept the pressure on after moving ahead, as
Brittney Greenback and Shuman each took shots in the next five minutes that missed the target.
Fresh into the game in the game in the 29th minute,
Madison Barber sent in a cross off of a corner kick, and Greenback's shot was blocked by the SFU back line.
Shuman scored her first goal of the season with a minute before the halftime break, making the score 2-0 in favor of the 'Jackets after a corner kick by Barber.
Scoring again immediately after the break, Sagdahl pushed the score to 3-0 on a finish in the 47th minute on a pass from Shuman.
Johnson fired a shot in the 48th minute, as Sandhu made a save for the Clan. Sagdahl and Shuman each missed wide to the left with shots over the next four minutes, before Marra made the score 4-0 in the 61st minute when her cross was misdirected into the net by SFU.
The 'Jackets continued to control the game into the later part of the second, and
Amanda Perri kept Sandhu on her toes with a shot on goal in the 81st minute.
MSUB earned a pair of corner kicks down the stretch, but neither team had a serious attempt in the final 10 minutes as time expired.
The 4-0 win for MSUB was its largest margin of victory, since the team downed Northwest Nazarene by the same score on Nov. 5, 2011.
ON TAP: MSUB returns home next week to host Saint Martin's and Western Oregon as only four games remain on the conference schedule. Entering Saturday's match in third place in the GNAC standings, the Yellowjackets maintain strong positioning to collect one of four berths to the GNAC Championships beginning Nov. 6 at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash.
