W. Basketball Gains Sole Possession of First Place in GNAC

BELLINGHAM, Wash.  – The Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball team won their game against Western Washington University on Thursday, Jan. 30, 71-63.
 
With the win, MSU Billings moves to 15-5 overall and 8-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference to take a one game lead over WWU.  Western Washington University falls to 11-7 and 7-3 in the GNAC.
 
MSUB is now on a five-game winning streak.  The Yellowjackets stopped a 26 game home-win streak for the Vikings and a six-game conference winning streak.  This is the also the first time MSUB has swept WWU in a season since 1999 when MSU Billings defeated the Vikings in both season games and then again in the postseason when the Yellowjackets made it to the Elite Eight.
 
It was back and forth in the first half as neither team led by more than six.  With 6:48 left in the first half, Kayleen Goggins would make a lay-up to put MSUB up 22-16.  WWU would go on a six-point run to tie the game up, but two free-throws by Janiel Olson and a jump shot by Bobbi Knudsen had the Yellowjackets heading into half-time with a two-point lead, 37-35.
 
In the first half, MSUB shot 56 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point territory.  Knudsen led all scorers with 13 points. 
 
The second half would feature a drop in the Yellowjackets shooting percentage, but an increase in their rebounding.  MSUB had 18 points off of second chance opportunities.  MSU Billings would end the game with a 43-24 edge in rebounds.
 
In the second half, the Vikings would shoot 28 percent from the field and were 0-7 from three-point territory.  For the game WWU was 1-11 from the three-point arc as the Yellowjackets held the Vikings to  a 7 percent overall shooting percentage; their lowest of the season.
 
For Western Washington Sydney Donaldson would finish the game with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.  Sarah Hill led the team points with 16.  She also pulled down nine rebounds.
 
For MSUB, Knudsen finished the contest with a game-high 28 points.  She also had seven rebounds and four assists.
 
Goggins was 5-10 for the game and finished with 12 points.  Chelsea Banis had a team-high 12 rebounds.  Janiel Olson finished with 11.
 
On Saturday, the team heads to Canada to face Simon Fraser University.  The game is scheduled for a 5:15 PM Pacific Time tip-off.  Live video and live stats can be found at MSUBSports.com.
