BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball team won their game against Saint Martin's University Thursday, Jan. 23, 75-56.
It was a battle of two first-place teams in Alterowitz Gymnasium as the Yellowjackets hosted the Saints. The game would start out as a battle as both teams gained and lost possession under the basket.
"You know we started out a little sluggish, we were tight, especially in transition, so I thought we were lucky to have a 12 point lead at the half because it sure didn't feel like it," Head Coach
Kevin Woodin said.
The final three minutes in the first half featured a 10-2 run by MSU Billings (13-5, 6-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) to send the game to the locker room, MSUB 32, SMU 20. The 20 points for Saint Martin's (11-6, 5-3 GNAC) was the second lowest point total in the first half for the Saints of the season.
The Yellowjackets were 13-32 for 40.6 percent in the first half and 4-15 for 26.7 percent from the three-point arc. MSUB held Saint Martin's to 25 percent shooting in the first half overall and only 14 percent from three-point territory.
"The key to the first half was the way we played in the final 3-4 minutes in order to get the double digit lead," Coach Woodin said. "I thought
Brandy Kumm sparked us with a big 3 during that period."
At the half, MSUB's
Bobbi Knudsen led all scorers with 10 points and five assists, while
Janiel Olson had 10 rebounds.
In the second half Montana State Billings would continue to increase their lead, staying ahead by as many as 23 points. The Yellowjackets also improved their overall shooting to 54 percent from the field and finished the game at 47.7 percent.
"In the second half we got the ball into the paint better and our posts made more decisive moves. I thought our perimeter players had some great entry passes to them," Coach Woodin said. "Bobbi played a great second half tonight. She made the correct reads offensively and was able to score or pass effectively."
MSUB outscored SMU 34-12 in the paint.
Knudsen was just a few short of a triple-double as she finished with a game-high 20 points, nine rebounds and a game-high eight assists. Olson led all players on the glass as she pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Also finishing in the double-digits for the Yellowjackets,
Kayleen Goggins was 6-9 from the field with two three-point baskets for a total of 14 points.
Chelsea Banis was 5-8 for 12 points.
Quinn Peoples had a game-high three three-point baskets for MSUB.
"It was a great win for us tonight against a very good St. Martin's team," Coach Woodin stated. "I was impressed with their defense against us in the first half. We were out of rhythm on offense and a lot of that was due to them."
The Saints were led by Krista Stabler who had 16 points. Angela Gelhar had 10 points and three assists. Chelsea Haskey had six points. She and Ciara Pedroni both finished with six rebounds.
MSU Billings outrebounded the Saints 34-29. Saint Martin's bench provided 27 of their total points. Both teams were equal in points off of turnovers with 10. MSUB had a slight-edge in second-chance points 10-6.
Montana State University Billings next game will be at home against Western Oregon University on Saturday, Jan. 25. The game will have an early start of 5:15 PM as directly following the game will be a Men's game against Seattle Pacific University which has a scheduled start time of 7:30 PM.
"We are looking forward to playing Western Oregon on Saturday," Coach Woodin stated. "I know it will be another tough GNAC contest."
Saturday's contest is also Hall of Fame night as during half-time of the Men's game, the four newest inductees to the Montana State University Billings Hall of Fame and Distinction, Dr. Jim Elliot, Heidi Lehman, Megan Plank, and Pryor Orser, will be honored.
